VenomIs Sony betting on black in a bid to jump-start its aging "Spider-Man" franchise? That's the news coming out of Hollywood as the studio reportedly develops a spin-off around Venom, the menacing alien symbiote featured in "Spider-Man 3” that bonded with both Peter Parker and disgraced reporter Eddie Brock.

Introduced to the Marvel Universe more than twenty years ago, Venom has provided a variety of hosts with enhanced powers, always with devastating effects as it perpetrates a reign of terror. As one of the most villainous characters in the Marvel arsenal, could this pile of extraterrestrial goo really transition to leading man?

"I think Venom could headline a good movie on his own, but it would be tricky and would depend in large part on the script," Venom's creator David Michelinie told MTV News. As the "Amazing Spider-Man" writer behind the origin story depicted in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 3," Michelinie argues the film's success would depend most on who's inhabiting the suit. Read More...

Those lucky Brits at Empire have gone and snagged four new images from "Watchmen," including the dandy one shown below of scruffy ruffian The Comedian (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Christian Bale in 'The Dark Knight'It's easy to have Bat envy. He gets the car, the gadgets, the mansion -- what's not to love? "I dressed up as Batman at Halloween," admits Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent/Two-Face). "I had the sheets and the pillows and everything. I was a fan."

But if some of the "Dark Knight" cast had their druthers, they'd play someone else -- just for kicks.

"It shows Christopher Nolan has imagination that he didn't cast me as the villain," said Gary Oldman (Jim Gordon), "since somehow I got into this thing of always playing these eccentric characters. But I always liked the Riddler. I liked the whole Riddle aspect. I loved the suit. I thought the suit was pretty cool. You have to be pretty fit, though, don't you, to wear the Riddler outfit?" VenomThe good news is Sony is eyeing a "Venom" film based on the crazy cool nemesis of everyone's favorite webslinger. The bad news is...well didn't Venom kind of suck in "Spider-Man 3”? Alright, let's put that aside for the moment and concentrate on the still undeniably cool news. (Click here to read what Venom's creator and writers think of the news.)

Hollywood Reporter says that Sony "is hoping the [Venom] could serve as an antidote to the aging 'Spider-Man' franchise in the way that Fox has used Wolverine to add longevity to its "X-Men" franchise." An intriguing idea to breathe new life into a franchise that desperately needs something, I would say. Read More...

'Coraline'Neil Gaiman’s “Coraline” is all about dichotomy and duplication, what the two sides of the same coin can actually be like -- something Two-Face would appreciate. Fitting then, that “Coraline” itself is being duplicated, so that there will be two versions out next year – one on the big screen, and one on the stage.

The story -- in which a girl swaps her real life/ parents for a mirror world and replica parents, only to have her dream world turn sinister -- was first set to be adapted as a 3D stop-motion film by Henry Selick (“The Nightmare Before Christmas”). Laika is in the late stages of filming the project, to be released February 2009.

“It’s the largest stop-motion production anyone’s ever done,” Gaiman said. “There are 40-something sets, and it’s absolutely astonishing. Things move one frame at a time. Intellectually, I thought I understood that, but it wasn’t until I was in the theater, watching a rehearsal, that I realized why it is you’re lucky to get a handful of footage every day. It’s more impressive than with a computer, because it’s real.” Read More...

The Rock and us have shared quite a relationship for the superhero flick "Shazam." Back in September, Mr. Johnson asked our readers to decide which of the film's characters he should suit up for. Then in November, he accepted the fans' judgement and announced he would play the villainous Black Adam. Now it's nine months later, so what's the latest?

When we caught up with the affable star at Comic-Con, he discussed diving deeper into the character as he waits for the film -- from "Get Smart" director Pete Segal -- to get the official go-ahead. Hear what he had to say in the video below, and then click here to watch even more of our Comic-Con coverage.

Seth Rogen"You go [online] and everybody complains about everything," Seth Rogen told us last November. "They could find out Jesus Christ was making a movie with Frank Miller and they'd say, 'That's a terrible combination!'"

The topic at hand was Rogen's planned adaptation of the "Green Hornet," a superhero property that had floated around Hollywood for years, finally landing at the feet of the famed comic. And while Rogen was surprisingly open with us on his plans for the film, which included revelations on the planned comedic tone and the character of Kato among other details, he was also understandably wary of the fan reaction. In short, ever since his involvement was announced, he had gotten pummeled. Read More...

Christian Bale in By Shaheem Reid

When you look at all the financial records it has broken, "The Dark Knight" was the most anticipated film ever. However, as we learned from "Spidey 3" (although I loved it), box office receipts don't always equal fan or critic appreciation.

This summer's main event, "The Dark Knight" delivered. If you don't think "TDK" is the greatest comic book movie ever, you're crazier than the Joker and all the inmates in Arkum. Director Christopher Nolan has erected a new pillar of cinematic artistry and created the new standard for the genre. He brought realistic grit, pleasant fright, and courageous edge to this latest Caped Crusader adventure/ crime drama. He kept all the Batmaniacs on edge for over two hours. And oh yeah, the action is going to keep your hand in the bag of popcorn like it's your own personal Michael Jackson glove. Read More...

'Preacher'If “Watchmen” and “Wanted” can work for the big screen – one by being faithful to the source, the other by ignoring it -- what other "unfilmable" comics might be ripe for big-screen adaptation? Yesterday we talked about "Lost Girls," "Sandman" and "It's A Bird." Today we're asking, how about:

Garth Ennis' "Preacher" -- Producer Neal Moritz is shopping this around to studios -- all it takes is one visionary who can see the potential in anti-hero Jesse Custer. He's got the "word of God," which gives him the power to command people to do whatever he wants -- and it ain't pretty ("Eat your gun," for instance). The story gets more blasphemous towards the climax, so don't get skittish -- just adapt the beginning, as he teams up with ex-girlfriend Tulip and vampire Cassidy to set out on his quest to find God.
