To hear Kevin Grevioux tell it, the war between vampires and werewolves has been going on for centuries. Now if only it would continue for the next couple years, we might actually have something, namely, of course, a story about the war between the vampires and werewolves which has been going on for centuries.
Grevioux will introduce the first of those stories with his new comic “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans,” the cover art for which you can only see exclusively on MTV News. Its release and story coincide with the in-development “Underworld” prequel, which “is basically Lucian’s origin story, how he came to be the first Lycan leader and also what the slave system was like for the werewolves under the rule of the vampires,” Grevioux explained. “You know, ‘Spartacus’ with werewolves or ‘Gladiator’ with werewolves.”
But what interests Grevioux more than the one shot movie adaptation, however, is the chance to expand the “Underworld” universe with regular issues, chronicling all the back story he created but wasn’t able to fit into the movies (Grevioux was a co-writer on the first film).
“There was always a massive back-story that I wanted to explore, but other writers had come in and some things changed, some things stayed the same, some get modified, and then you look back on the elements that you thought were there and they're gone,” he said. “So it was always my intention to expand beyond what we’ve seen in the films. With the subsequent series I’m going to be doing just that.”
In fact, Grevioux is positively jazzed at the possibility of creating a whole new mythos beyond what fans of the series have come to know from the films, broadening the story from just the present day to include “action in the ancient world,” he said.
“We’ll be meeting other races of werewolves and were-creatures, other covens of vampires. I’m going to expand it in lots of different ways,” he excitedly revealed. “What I plan on doing is expanding the universe by using different characters for the most part and only bringing back familiar faces every now and then. These are stories that I’ve had in my head for years.”
It’s an ambitious plan that Grevioux hopes one day even leads to something else equally ambitious – an “Underworld 4.”
“I want to show that there can be life with this franchise if you’re willing to take this other direction. Because Kate [Beckinsale] isn’t going to want to play Selene perpetually,” he said. “My thing is, hey, let’s take one of these universes and expand it infinitely.”
What do you think? Jazzed for “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans”? Like the cover art? Want to read Grevioux’s expansion of the universe? Sound off on all your thoughts below.
