Short of locking yourself in a trunk and burying yourself under a giant rock (which we here at Splash Page DO NOT recommend, just FYI), the odds lie somewhere between "fat chance" and "100% impossible" that you can go a day without hearing the words "The Dark Knight."
As we approach the one month anniversary of its release, the one question fans and bloggers keep asking is, "How high can 'The Dark Knight' go?" in terms of box office receipts and even Oscar buzz?
As it stands, "Dark Knight" holds the #3 spot with a total draw of $441.5 million, and is expected to surpass "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" total of $461 million by the end of the coming weekend. However, it’s unlikely that "The Dark Knight" will surpass "Titanic" with its $600.8 million record.
To put it into perspective, "The Dark Knight" has been the #1 film for the past three weeks -- "Titanic" held that spot for three and a half months. While it would be nice for Geek Nation to see one of their own looking down from the top of the mountain, we'll just have to settle for that cozy #2 spot for the foreseeable future.
Even more interesting in terms of the current "Dark Knight" mania is the talk of awards -- namely, Oscar buzz. Sure, the rumors surrounding a posthumous Oscar nod for Heather Ledger's portrayal of the Joker is nothing new, but lately there's been whispers about the film getting a "Best Picture" nod. And while in this day and age it seems down-right crazy to think a superhero popcorn flick would get that type of shine, let us remind you that, not too long ago, geek-fare like "Raiders of the Lost Arc" and "Lord of the Rings" we're in the running for Oscar gold.
The sky seems to be the limit, but how high do you think "The Dark Knight" will fly? Do you think there's still hope for "The Dark Knight" to take the top spot on the all-time box office list? What about all this Oscar buzz -- is it worth it? Let us know in the comments!
