In a recent article published by Variety that made the rounds over the weekend, Warner Bros. and DC Comics discussed their upcoming plan of attack in terms of upcoming DC-based films and properties.
For the most part, it focused on the success of "The Dark Knight" (now the #2 box officer earner of all time) and upcoming (and unexplained) "big changes" in store for how the studio will work with the publisher moving forward. However, one aspect that caught a lot of attention was the mention of the "Justice League" film -- and how that project just might once and for all be dead.
And unfortunately, we fans can only blame ourselves.
According to the article, one problem seems to be finding just the right script for the undeniable epic, especially considering it would star a cast of young, up-and-coming actors playing roles that are often synonymous with already established stars (in other words, most fans are used to seeing Christian Bale as Batman, not Johnny No-Name). However, the biggest sticking point seems to be the histories and origins of each character, and how Warner Bros. really wants to get it just right before they commit the big money this film will no doubt require.
"There’s a massive interest and knowledge in the comic book industry and it takes time to sort of catch up and understand the characters and the history, where they’ve intersected with each other and what their worlds are," explained WB President of Production, Jeff Robinov. "That’s part of the education that we’re going through.”
In other words, it seems Warner Bros. (for once) will be listening to the fanboys out there, only maybe to a fault. Heaven knows hardcore comic fans can be a tough crowd to please, but could this reputation kill what could potentially be the superhero film to end all superhero films?
What do you think? Do you care about character histories to the point where you'd prefer this film stay on hold, or do you just want to see DC's big guns doing what they do best? Talk to us in the comments!
