Sure, the script for "The Dark Knight' says Aaron Eckhart's hero-turned-villain Harvey Dent (aka Two-Face) is dead, and during a press event yesterday, SuperHero Hype reports that Eckhart did everything short of tying a toe tag on the character himself when questioned about a potential return.
But as any true comic book fan will tell you, no one stays dead in comics. That's why we spoke to a few well-known creators in and around the comics scene to get their opinion on whether Two-Face can - or should - make a return to the big screen.
"Sure, they CAN bring Two-Face back, but that doesn’t mean they should,” "Batman: Golden Streets of Gotham" artist Cliff Chiang told MTV News. “That would rob ‘The Dark Knight’ of its ending just to continue the franchise. I really dug Aaron Eckhart’s performance, but I’d much rather see them continue with a new story and a new villain."
“Yeah, I felt like that they did him justice in ‘Dark Knight,’ too,” famed writer/director Kevin Smith echoed.
“But could he continue on?" Smith asked. "Absolutely. I mean when I saw the movie I got the very clear impression that he was dead, but then all of a sudden people online were like no no no, he might not be dead. Suddenly I was like, ‘They might be right!’ So, yeah, conceivably they could totally bring him back if they wanted to and just be like Harvey Dent to the world died, but in real life they just shipped him away to Arkham.”
As Chiang and Smith (and Jeff Goldblum in “Jurassic Park”) so expertly point out, though, just because you CAN do something, doesn’t mean that you SHOULD. It’s been our contention all along that bringing back Two-Face would somehow lessen the impact of his arc in “Dark Knight.” Still – plans change. Can anyone doubt that had Heath Ledger not died, we would be seeing more of the Joker?
Guess what? That may be the very reason we’d actually get more Two-Face, writer Brian Azzarello joked.
"When Heath Ledger died, Harvey Dent came back to life,” he wrote.
So we’ll acknowledge that even though he’s dead, it’s possible he could come back. Would you like to see that? Or something completely different? Sound off below.
