Director DJ Caruso has been making the rounds in support of his upcoming film "Eagle Eye" (which hits theaters this Friday), but there's been no shortage of information coming out of his press tour regarding his adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan's celebrated Vertigo series "Y: The Last Man" -- with the most recent update revealing his plans to film "Y" with IMAX screenings in mind.
Earlier this month, we told you about Caruso's plans to break the 60-issue story into a three-film franchise, as well as his thoughts on casting many of the primary characters and potential story points. Now, in a recent video interview with Collider, Caruso said the IMAX success of "The Dark Knight" has him pitching IMAX-friendly filming for "Y", too.
"I would definitely say I'd want this to be an IMAX movie," Caruso told Collider.
The big-screen, big-sound potential of IMAX certainly seems to have Hollywood buzzing these days, as Jon Favreau announced similar IMAX-friendly plans for the "Iron Man" sequels during a press event held last week.
Along with pitching the IMAX potential of "Y", Caruso revealed a bit more information about certain plot changes he planned for the film(s) in an interview with the L.A. Times' geek-beat blog, Hero Complex.
"The challenge was how to keep the story moving. So we added a ticking clock in there for Yorick that actually Brian loved and thinks is a great idea for the movie: We separate Yorick from Ampersand and when they got separated, Yorick starts getting sick," Caruso told Hero Complex. "There's this realization that he will die unless they get back together. So they have to get Ampersand back and 355 and Yorick are forced to go out and do that."
Caruso added that the level of fan reaction to the "Y" project thus far has him treading new ground, but he's had the support of Vaughan throughout the process -- changes and all.
"You want to be very true to the material but the good news is when we presented it to [Vaughan] he thought it was great," said Caruso. "I've never been involved in a project that has so much fanboy chatter. I get e-mailed a lot of opinion about what I'm doing."
Does "Y: The Last Man" and IMAX sound like a match made in theater heaven, readers? What about the plot changes Caruso has proposed? Let us know what you think in the comments!
