From Ryan Reynolds cracking wise to futuristic knights slashing monsters, “Van Wilder” and “Wild Hogs” director Walt Becker ventures into new territory with “Last Reign: Kings of War” this October through BOOM! Studios.
Kicking off on October 29, the four-issue miniseries, created by Becker and co-written by Michael Allen Nelson, takes place in a bleak, war-torn future where the armored rulers of Earth’s eight kingdoms unite against the orchestrator of the apocalypse for the future of mankind.
“I was searching for a completely new universe, and the idea that feudalism would rise again on Earth after the apocalypse seemed entirely plausible and fresh,” explained Becker. “It allowed me to combine two of my favorite genre — sci-fi, and stories of the most celebrated warriors on Earth, armored knights.”
Originally envisioned as a trilogy of novels, Becker took his Arthurian tale to BOOM!, which teamed him with Nelson, interior artist Lui Antonio and cover artist Karl Richardson.
“We had several meetings to discuss the big story ideas, who our characters were, their goals, the conflicts, etc.,” Nelson said, detailing the construction of each issue. “Once that was finished, Walt would give me his notes and suggestions on how to fine-tune the script into a final product.”
Pleased with the process, Becker praised the “Last Reign” team for helping him fulfill his vision. “I have a great group assembled here and I think the finished product shows all of the hard work,” he said.
Though Becker is staying busy in Hollywood with several films in development, he said to expect at least two more “Last Reign” installments, and possibly further unrelated comic projects.
“The comic book world has actually re-invigorated my love of the more ‘epic tales’ because they can be done on a scale that is cost-conscious but just as effective as movies,” said Becker. “You don’t need $200 million to be able to write a kick-ass comic book.”
Huge budgets notwithstanding, Becker’s cinematic background gives legs to “Last Reign” jumping to the big or perhaps small screen.
“Film is definitely something that could happen,” said Becker. “The idea of post-apocalyptic feudal knights doing battle with men and genetically-engineered monsters also lends itself into making a fantastic game.”
Despite the project’s licensing fertility, Becker emphasizes the importance of its present incarnation.
“Right now, ‘Last Reign’ is a comic book and that’s something I’m really excited about and proud of,” said Becker.

So what do you think, readers? Are you looking forward to Walt Becker’s apocalypse-fueled comics debut?
