‘TMNT’ Director Kevin Munroe Updates Status Of Dylan Dog ‘Dead Of Night’ Adaptation

'Dylan Dog'To even the most hardcore comic fan, the character Dylan Dog is still a relative unknown. Created by Italian writer Tiziano Sclavi and originally published by Sergio Bonelli Editore, the classic horror series eventually found its way stateside thanks to Dark Horse Comics, but still remains overshadowed by its mainstream American counterparts.

Director Kevin Munroe hopes to change all of that, however.

In an interview with ShockTillYouDrop.com, Munroe provided some insight regarding the obscure Italian monster hunter and where the upcoming Dylan Dog film — titled “Dead of Night” — currently stands as far as development. When last Splash Page heard of the project, “Superman” star Brandon Routh mentioned that he was indeed attached to the film, and that he hoped to begin filming in January on location in New Orleans. But is the film still on schedule according to its director?

“We’re coming up with a cast list and talking to a few actors,” said Munroe in the STYD.com interview. “We’ve sent the script off to get feedback and gauge interest. The good thing is that Josh [Oppenheimer] and Tom [Dean Donnelly] wrote such a good script, it just really attracts people, so I think within a month we’re going to start releasing names of who’s coming aboard.”

The article also makes mention of one of the biggest obstacles the film will face in order to be successful — standing out from other horror-based superhero films such as “Hellboy” or “Constantine.” However, rather than try and run away from the genre, Munroe plans on embracing it, but at the same time bringing something fresh to the table.

“It’s really cool because the curse and the blessing of Dylan Dog is that it’s all very familiar territory,” said Munroe. “I still maintain it’s presented in such a fresh way. In the same way you think you’ve seen every alien movie, and then ‘Men in Black’ comes along and you realize you never looked at it from that film’s point of view. Dylan Dog does that well.”
