In this day and age, when it comes to comic films and their sequels, it's clear that getting the same director back is just as vital as having the original film's stars return. After all, the internet blew up when Marvel made it official that Jon Favreau had signed on for "Iron Man 2," and waits with baited breath to hear whether or not Christopher Nolan will come back to the Batman franchise he's helped create.
That being said, fans of the "Hellboy" franchise should be a bit concerned with comments made by director Guillermo del Toro which ran on IESB.com this week. When asked if he'd be willing to give up the "Hellboy" franchise considering the workload he'll be undertaking once production officially begins on "The Hobbit," del Toro replied, "I would love to do the third one and finish this incarnation of Hellboy the way we started it, consistent with the way we started it. But, it's up to them. The reality is that those are not decisions under a director's control."
And while that shouldn't be taken as a "no" from del Toro, the director was more than willing to allow someone else to take over for a possible B.P.R.D. (the branch of government that Hellboy works for) spin-off.
"Mike [Mignola] is the owner of the characters, if he wants to do anything he should go ahead and do it," said del Toro in the IESB piece. "I think that the beauty of it is the Universal films that we established are separated from the comics, separate from the animation, separate from the video game. They kind of interact with each other but Mike was very wise in keeping them independent."
In fact, it would almost make sense for a B.P.R.D. one-off considering Hellboy apparently quit the force at the end of "The Golden Army" -- and del Toro couldn't agree more.
"It would be a good set up for [a B.P.R.D. spin-off], a good time for it."
Would a del Toro-less "Hellboy" flick turn you off from seeing it? Who else do you think could do a good job directing "Hellboy?" Talk it up in the comments.
