Way back when the cast of "Watchmen" was initially announced, fans across the board were asking the same question, "who are the Watchmen?" Not in the sense that the book asks (that being, "Who watches The Watchmen?"), but more along the lines that, with very few exceptions, most of the actors cast were relative unknowns.
MTV caught up with "Watchmen" director Zack Snyder and asked him about the casting process.
"It's funny, they almost kind of fell in one at a time," recalled Snyder. "Like Dr. Manhattan, we would talk about who we might consider and then we were like, 'Oh, I wonder if Billy [Crudup] would be interested in something like this?" Then we put it out to him and he comes back saying, 'Yeah, that sounds cool.' So it was almost on a character by character basis that we kind of put it together. There was no, like, 'We need this level star or we need this kind of box office appeal."
Meanwhile, some actors were a bit more eager for certain roles -- such as Jackie Earle Haley (prior to "Watchmen," he received an Academy Award nomination for "Little Children"), who took a proactive approach to the casting.
"Jackie sent me this DVD, this little audition piece he had done with his buddies and it's awesome," said Snyder. "I'll try and put it up on the DVD when we release it because it's awesome."
What do you think of the cast of "Watchmen?" Were there any actors or actresses that you think would've been more suited for any of the characters? Discuss below in the comments.
