Scarlett JohanssonI hate to kick Imagi Entertainment when they're down, but in the wake of news yesterday that the Imagi is in serious financial trouble comes word that Scarlett Johansson, once rumored to appear as a voice in "Astro Boy" (even to the extent that she was, at one point, listed in a studio press release), was never officially signed on for the role.

MTV News caught up with Johansson at the junket for "He's Just Not That Into You" and asked her about the "Astro Boy" rumors.

"I had kind of sort of met on it and stuff, but I don't know where that came from," Johansson told MTV. "I had never been committed to it. I don't know what happened to it." Read More...

'El Zombo Fantasma'We've long known that wrestling and comic books share a lot of common ground -- they're both overly dramatic, feature bulbous men and women in spandex, there's plenty of fighting, and their fans are ... well, kinda nuts.

So the news today that Death Ray Films and Maya Entertainment will be bringing the supernatural wrestling epic "El Zombo Fantasma" -- based on the three-issue miniseries by David Wilkins, Kevin Munroe and Dark Horse Comics -- to life as a feature film is pretty much a no-brainer. Monroe will get a shot to write and direct the project, and also co-produce the film along with Wilkins, Chris Patton and Robert Sanchez. Dark Horse head honcho Mike Richardson will serve as an executive producer.

After the jump, check out the promo image for "El Zombo Fantasma," which was released along with this announcement. Read More...

Yesterday, "Coraline" director Henry Selick told us why scaring children isn't always a bad thing, and today we have an exclusive clip from "Coraline" that hints at some of the frights to be found in Selick's 3D, stop-motion animated adaptation of Neil Gaiman's story.

When Coraline finds a door to another world -- a better version of her own world, in fact -- she learns that a world where everything is the way she wants it isn't always preferable, and that her "Other Mother" might not have Coraline's best interests in mind.

"Coraline" hits theaters February 6, but just in case you want to catch up with the much-anticipated adaptation, read on for a roundup of all things "Coraline" here on Splash Page. Read More...

'The Warriors' #1Three decades after Walter Hill's cult-classic film "The Warriors" first hit theaters, the Warriors are once again poised to--as one of its most popular lines of dialogue suggests--"come out and plaaaaaay." This time around, however, the adventures of the New York City gang and its rivals will be unfolding not on the screen, but in the pages of a new comic book series.

As we first reported back in July 2008 (when we debuted the first piece of promo art for "The Warriors"), the 30th anniversary of the film's release will include the debut of publisher Dabel Brothers' adaptation of the film, with an eye toward spinning off new stories based on the world of "The Warriors" down the road.

MTV News spoke with "The Warriors" writer David Atchison about translating the original film into comic book form, and received an exclusive preview of the first 10 pages of "The Warriors" #1, which debuts at New York Comic-Con next week. Read More...

Neil GaimanNeil Gaiman, the prolific multimedia scribe who we've been mentioning quite a bit lately in reference to the upcoming 3D animated adaptation of his novel "Coraline," has been awarded the John Newbery Medal -- one of the most prestiguous awards for children literature -- by the American Library Association. Gaiman received the award for his recently published story "The Graveyard Book," about a boy raised by ghosts.

The recipient of the award, announced today by the Association for Library Service to Children (a division of the ALA), is judged to have provided the year’s "most outstanding contribution to children’s literature."

“A child named Nobody, an assassin, a graveyard and the dead are the perfect combination in this deliciously creepy tale, which is sometimes humorous, sometimes haunting and sometimes surprising,” said Newbery Committee Chair Rose V. Treviño of "The Graveyard Book." Read More...

'Coraline'Making scary stories family-friendly for film is somewhat of a specialty for director Henry Selick. And when it comes to collaborations with creators like Neil Gaiman on “Coraline” or Tim Burton on “The Nightmare Before Christmas” his source material comes steaming with tongue-in-cheek horror tropes ripe for Selick’s particular style of stop-motion animation.

“Some would say it's too scary for kids, or it's not scary enough for adults,” Selick said of “Coraline” in an exclusive interview with MTV News. “Doing it as a stop-motion film would sort of bridge those two audiences in some respects. Stop-motion has its own creeky feel to it. It has a charm, in a sense. You don't know how big that thing is you're looking at, but you know it exists.” Read More...

When it comes to the halls of academia, comic books have come a long way from the days when our grandparents used to do the old "hide the funnybook inside your arithmetic text book" trick. These days, there are college-level courses that study the story structures of some of comics' most acclaimed series, and, in the case of Vicki Lewis -- who provides her vocal talents to DC's direct-to-DVD animated feature "Wonder Woman" -- comics were a way of going back to school.

"I’ll be honest, I knew nothing about the mythology of any of this," said Lewis of her character, Persephone. "I got the script, and oftentimes I just kind of look at my part, but this is a fascinating story. I ended up spending half a night on Wikipedia going through the real mythology of the character. Persephone is a very fascinating character in Greek mythology and the comic books. I wasn’t a great student, so I love any opportunity at my age to learn something new. So that’s how I prepared."

After the jump, we've got more from Lewis on her role as Persephone, as well as another all-new image from the upcoming DVD, "Wonder Woman." Read More...

'Oldboy'It's been several months since we last heard about Steven Spielberg's plans to adapt the popular manga "Oldboy" into a live-action film starring Will Smith, but fans of both the manga and the original live-action adaptation released in 2003 have been buzzing about whether the edgy story will be softened for American audiences.

With the film and the original manga well-known for their disturbing themes -- a crucial plot point involves incest -- and graphic violence, is the typically family-friendly Spielberg up to the task of staying true to the dark, violent nature of the story?

"It's the thing that Steven was attracted to," Smith told MTV News. "We're working from the comic and we haven't done anything other than talk about it. So we'll see what happens, but he's not going to do anything that would be less than stunning." Read More...
