This week kicked off with pomp and celebration as the 2009 Academy Awards went big on comic book movies, including a much-deserved Oscar for Heath Ledger and a comics-friendly musical number by "Wolverine" star Hugh Jackman. Here's what the rest of the week had in store for us:
- We got reactions from various comic book creators to this year's Oscars, and their responses might surprise you!
- Some hints were dropped about the "Iron Man 2" story and an "Iron Man 2" casting call hit the 'Net, while one cast member left the film, another confirmed his role in "Iron Man 2" (among other Marvel films), and one remained undecided. In the end we decided that an "Iron Man 2" news roundup was the best bet for keeping track of it all.
- Seth Rogen's "Green Hornet" movie found itself a director, and the writer/star of the film explained how the new guy behind the camera got the job.
- We brought you the first details about the "Stretch Armstrong" movie that will make a "reluctant superhero" out of the popular toy.
- And just like every other weeks for the past few months, "Watchmen" news popped up around every corner, with Zack Snyder explaining key differences between the film and the book, some discussion of Alan Moore's anti-Hollywood stance with the "Watchmen" director, and yet another new clip, with a focus on Rorschach this time around. Snyder capped it all off by telling MTV that he'd prefer if newbies don't read "Watchmen" before they see the film (and you can imagine how well that went over with fans).
And there you have it, folks -- see ya Monday!
Announced today at Wonder Con in San Francisco, comics publisher Boom Studios and movie studio/publisher Fox Atomic (a division of 20th Century Fox) have formed a co-publishing agreement to produce ongoing and limited series comics based on Fox Atomic film properties.
As part of the arrangement, the Fox Atomic Comics publishing arm that previously produced original graphic novels based on Fox Atomic properties such as "28 Days Later" and "The Hills Have Eyes" will become a Boom Studios imprint. While neither company has announced any of the upcoming titles resulting from the deal, several projects are expected to go public in July and throughout the summer convention season.
"We'll be doing a number of established properties that people will be instantly familiar with and some older properties that might need a brand new coat of paint," Fox Atomic editor-in-chief R. Eric Lieb told MTV News. Read more...
Earlier today we brought you some "Green Lantern" casting rumors that attached "Star Trek" and "Terminator: Salvation" actor Anton Yelchin as a potential Hal Jordan in the much-anticipated film based on DC's Emerald Knight. While the latest news doesn't cast a new light on the future of the project, it does give cause for some "What If?" pondering, with reports surfacing that "Monster House" and "City of Ember" director Gil Kenan was initially tagged to helm "Green Lantern" before current director Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale") was attached.
According to The Playlist, anonymous sources (which should always prompt you to take whatever news that follows with a grain of salt) indicate that Kenan was all set to direct "Green Lantern" until a poor showing for the well-reviewed but under-the-radar "City of Ember" caused the studio to look elsewhere. Earlier this week, we rounded up the various pieces of "Iron Man 2" casting news that have been peppering the 'Net lately, and while there haven't been any changes -- which is a surprise, given the revolving-door casting reports for the film these days -- there is an update to bring your way.
Not only has former Black Widow actress Emily Blunt confirmed her non-casting in "Iron Man 2," but the actress offered up some frank thoughts on her brief Marvel movie experience. Read more...
In the grand scheme of movie news, it might take a backseat only to the “Arrested Development" movie. But other than that long-in-development translation, it’s hard to think of a more-anticipated great white whale than “Sin City 2.”
We’ve been harassing everyone from Mickey Rourke and Frank Miller to Robert Rodriguez and Alexis Bledel about the possible sequel, and even asked Angelina Jolie -- and she wasn’t even in the first film.
So, if for no other reason than to complete our collection, I figured I’d better ask the larger-than-my-house Michael Clarke. In real life, you’d be hard-pressed to find a nicer guy -- and the “Street Fighter” star was more than happy to add his name to the list of actors who’d love to return to the black, white and red world of the 2005 flick. A trio of new promo shots for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" have hit the 'Net, and all three feature a solitary Hugh Jackman being the best there is at what he does -- and apparently, what he does is look like a complete bad-ass.
Last time we saw the "Wolverine" star, he was singing and dancing his way through a musical, comics-themed Oscars introduction that included nods to the night's big winner on the superhero front, "The Dark Knight," as well as "Iron Man" and, of course, a big "Wolverine" finale. While the latest images (posted on X-Men movie site XMF) don't seem to reveal anything new about the much-anticipated solo debut of Marvel's favorite Canucklehead, they do offer up a few more quality shots of the character Fox hopes to spin off into yet another comics-friendly franchise. (After the jump, check out two of the images in full-size format.) Read more...
3-D continues its comeback today with the announcement that the Top Cow seres "Aphrodite IX" has been picked up by Threshold Entertainment. First Henry Selick fervently stuck to 3-D for filming Neil Gaiman’s "Coraline,", then the makers of NBC's "Chuck" launched a post-Super Bowl event this year by broadcasting an episode in 3-D -- and now Top Cow’s green-haired femme fatale appears to be next.
"This is just the kind of franchise we love: a visually stunning world, amazing effects, a great story and a hot, kick-ass babe in the lead," Threshold’s Larry Kasanoff told The Hollywood Reporter. "What could be better?" Read more...
If you've ever wondered what Michael Jackson’s yard sale would look like, there's an auction at the Beverly Hills Hilton kicking off in April that should answer all of your questions. The King of Pop’s estate has a dumbfoundingly large catalog of geek goodies going up on the auction block -- and a few items clearly show that Jackson has a sweet tooth for superheroes.
In addition to life-size statues of Batman, Spider-Man and Superman, the Julien’s Auctions list of items up for bidding includes a signed Alex Ross print, a 1988 print displaying all of Marvel Comics’ characters, and signed polychrome Randy Bowen statues. There's even a life-size molded rubber Batman costume fitted over a replica of Michael Jackson -- a two-for-one deal, perhaps? (We've posted a few images from the auction after the jump.) "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin is rumored to be the front-runner to play DC's Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, after Ryan Gosling (“The Notebook”) and Emile Hersch (“Speed Racer”) passed on the role.
According to anonymous sources at Latino Review, the "Green Lantern" producers are looking for a young star, but also someone familiar. The site named Yelchin, who plays Kyle Reese in the upcoming “Terminator: Salvation” and a young Pavel Chekov in the upcoming “Star Trek” film, as a potential candidate after Gosling, Hersch and upcoming "Clash of the Titans" actor Sam Worthington passed. Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ.” George Lucas’ decision to make the “Star Wars” prequels. Gus Van Sant’s shot-by-shot remake of “Psycho.” And now, “Watchmen.”
In the history of Hollywood, few directors have ever attempted something as bold, daring and flat-out ballsy as Zack Snyder’s heartfelt attempt to bring Alan Moore’s “unfilmable” graphic novel to the big screen. Recently, we detailed several of the story tweaks he was forced to make while squeezing dozens of plotlines into the just-under-3-hours movie that hits theaters March 6. And I couldn’t help but ask: Should a newbie read the graphic novel before they see his movie, or go into it completely pure? Read more...
