Sony Pictures Animation wants a new animated feature from the character library of comic book publisher Platinum Studios. Sony, who also partnered with Platinum CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg on 1997's "Men in Black," revealed that they will tap at least one of Platinum's 5,600 characters to jump onto the big screen.
"I have known and respected Scott Rosenberg for many years as a great resource of characters, stories and ideas," Bob Osher, president of Sony Pictures Digital Prods, told The Hollywood Reporter. "We're looking forward to working with him and Platinum Studios to develop a feature from their library of stories and characters."
The move would add Platinum's mystery property to a list including "Atlantis Rising," "Cowboys and Aliens," and "Hero By Night" that currently have film or TV deals in the works. "Cowboys and Aliens" currently sits at Dreamworks with Robert Downey Jr. reportedly attached to star.
The Platinum stable of characters includes a handful of printed titles, as well as the company's wecbomics community site, DrunkDunk.com. Bringing their unnamed property to Sony would put it in the company of "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," "Hotel Transylvania," and "The Smurfs," all of which are lined up for production at SPA.
