Seth RogenBy now, you’ve most likely heard the beyond-awesome news that Seth Rogen’s “Green Hornet” movie will be directed by Mr. Michel Gondry, one of the most visually-stunning directors in Hollywood. But, being a movie buff, I’m always intrigued by the “What if?” possibilities of Steve McQueen starring in “The Bodyguard,” Christopher Walken as Han Solo, and so on.

Which is why I was intrigued when, moments after the Gondry news broke, I noticed that my Facebook friend James Wan had changed his status. “Damn you Michel Gondry *shaking fists*,” read the message from the “Saw” director. “Oh well the better man won.”

Moments later, James took the status update down. But lucky for us, Seth isn’t the type of Hollywood phony who hides behind “no comments” and the like. Read More...

'Thor'Just because Brian Michael Bendis won't be penning the upcoming "Thor" film doesn't mean the resident architect of the Marvel universe doesn't have a stake in bringing the property Midgard-side. After a much-discussed meeting with "Thor" director Kenneth Branagh alongside Marvel's Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada last week, Bendis told MTV News he's a true believer -- and that the director has hit enough Asgardian source material to understand what fans are looking for.

"It was very cool to see that he got it. We walked in the room and he said all the right words," said Bendis, who related the meeting to his own experiences establishing comics cred. "When I'm on a panel, there will be a buzzword I'll say that I know will make a real Avengers fan think, 'Okay, he's read it -- he knows.' That's definitely what we saw Kenneth Branagh do." It pleases me immensely that I'm able to type the following sentence: "28th century soldier Major Mitch Hunter leads a fight against an army of underworld NecroMutants." That's the one-line synopsis for "Mutant Chronicles," an upcoming sci-fi indie film that boasts an esteemed cast of no less than John Malkovich, Thomas Jane and Ron Perlman.

Ron Perlman in 'Mutant Chronicles'Click here or on the image above for more exclusive photos from "Mutant Chronicles."

Based on an early '90s role-playing game (which spawned comics), the movie finds four corporations duking it out over the planet's remaining resources when an errant bomb inadvertently unleaches a horde of mutants. Jane (as Hunter) must battle to save humanity, and along the way encounters Brother Samuel (Perlman) and Constantine (Malkovich). Got it? The film will premiere on HDNet Ultra VOD on Friday, March 27th, 2009, followed by a theatrical release in select cities on Friday, April 24.

Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, John Malkovich and... underworld NecroMutants? What do you think about this big-screen adaptation? Let us know whether you'll be checking it out, and what you think of the photos!

'Green Lantern'Warner Brothers is moving ahead with their next DC Comics movies by announcing release dates for “Green Lantern” and "Jonah Hex." The scarred Civil War veteran, Jonah Hex, will hit theaters Aug. 10, 2010, with the Emerald Knight arriving in time for the holidays, Dec. 17, 2010.

Last we heard, director Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”) was on the slate to direct "Green Lantern" with a script by Marc Guggenheim, Michael Green and Greg Berlanti -- the screenwriting team behind the clairvoyant lawyer TV series “Eli Stone.” No star has been announced to play the fighter pilot turned Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, but there's been no shortage of speculation. (I'm pulling for “Serenity” star Nathan Fillion.) Read More...

Joss WhedonBatman has been receiving lots of love from the mainstream movie world lately, but according to Joss Whedon, DC's Dark Knight is the publisher's only character with any chance of holding onto that lovin' Hollywood feeling.

"With that one big exception (Batman), DC's heroes are from a different era," Whedon recently told Maxim Magazine when asked why the publisher had so much trouble bringing its iconic characters to the big screen. "DC's characters, like Wonder Woman and Superman and Green Lantern, were all very much removed from humanity. Batman was the only character they had who was so rooted in pain, that had that same gift that the Marvel characters had, which was that gift of humanity that we can relate to." Read More...

'Watchmen'For the casual comic fan out there who only knows "Watchmen" as a super-hyped film based on something called a "graphic novel," the fact that one of the book's creators -- legendary writer Alan Moore -- wouldn't want his name attached to a film that's sure to bring in beaucoup box office receipts is probably quite confusing. However, Moore's unabashed hatred of all-things Hollywood when it comes to his work goes back well before "Watchmen," and in an interview with TotalFilm.com, he relates some of his thoughts on the subject, and as usual, doesn't hold back.

"The main reason why comics can’t work as films is largely because everybody who is ultimately in control of the film industry is an accountant," said Moore. "These people may be able to add up and balance the books, but in every other area they are stupid and incompetent and don’t have any talent." Read More...

FROM MOVIES.MTV.COM: Seth Rogen's high-profile superhero movie has a brand-new director -- one of the most distinctive visionaries in Hollywood -- and the star can only use three words to describe how he's feeling about it.

"It's f---ing crazy!" he said when we spoke with him Tuesday, accentuating the point with his trademark laugh.

His new "Green Hornet" collaborator is none other than Michel Gondry, the eye-popping auteur who gave us "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Be Kind Rewind," and too many classic music videos to list here. Capping off an exhaustive search, the "Pineapple Express" funnyman said Gondry is the perfect director for his comedic take on the crime-fighting newspaper publisher who first slipped into his green mask in 1936.

'Watchmen'FROM MTV.COM: Imagine filming the Bible, but taking Jesus off the cross. Shooting "Harry Potter," but having no time for the Sorting Hat. Putting "The Giving Tree" on celluloid, but having to change the ending.

Those are the types of quandaries director Zack Snyder navigated while adapting "Watchmen," the beloved graphic novel deemed "unfilmable" by many — including Alan Moore, its creator.

Impressively, the "300" filmmaker has crammed an endless amount of sacred information into the fiercely faithful movie that hits theaters March 6. At our recent "Spoilers" taping, Snyder discussed the ending that he had to tweak for the sake of length. In the following article, he discusses nine other spoiler-heavy (you've been warned!) additions/subtractions that bridged the gap between the splash page and the screen.

Heath Ledger in 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus'FROM MOVIES BLOG: Heath Ledger's posthumous win was undoubtedly the most emotional moment of this year's Oscars ceremony. It wasn't just the pain of seeing his family accept his award, but also the feeling that this was the final farewell to the talented actor, and his now legendary performance in "The Dark Knight."

However, as everyone knows, Ledger's Dark Knight performance wasn't his last. The actor was filming Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" at the time of his death. The film was nearly scrapped until Jude Law, Johnny Depp, and Colin Farrell stepped forward to take over the role, which was hastily rewritten to accommodate multiple performances.

The film is now complete, but it's future is still uncertain. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is having trouble finding a U.S. buyer and distributor.

'Michel Gondry'Back in December, we brought you the news that Stephen Chow would not be directing “The Green Hornet,” a project written by and starring Seth Rogen, but Columbia Pictures now appears to be in negotiations to replace Chow with director Michel Gondry. That’s right -- the same man who directed Jack Black and Jim Carrey in comedic sagas of the slightly surreal will now try his hand at a superhero film.

Announced today by The Hollywood Reporter, the choice of Gondry ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Be Kind Rewind") could signal a very different direction for the project than initially proposed by Rogen or envisioned by the studio. Read More...
