'Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark'Years of speculation, bizarre rumors and lofty creative ambitions will finally culminate in an opening night for “Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark” next year on Broadway. The high-profile musical will unite U2’s Bono and The Edge with Tony Award-winning director Julie Taymor (“Across the Universe”), promising high standards for the show’s sense of visual and sonic spectacle.

“The musical follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down—literally—when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling,” states the newly revealed plot synopsis. “This bullied science-geek—suddenly endowed with astonishing powers—soon learns, however, that with great power comes great responsibility as villains test not only his physical strength but also his strength of character.

'The Dark Knight'It's no secret that movies based on comic books had a big presence at this year's Academy Awards. From "Wolverine" star Hugh Jackman kicking off the Oscars with a comics-friendly musical note to one of the final awards going to deceased "Dark Knight" star Heath Ledger for his portrayal of The Joker, there was a lot for comics fans to like about this year's Oscars.

While much of the comics-savvy masses were happy just to be recognized by the Academy, the final tally of awards did leave some fans wondering whether the night should be viewed as a snub for the genre or the first step toward greater respect for comic books as a medium. In order to get some perspective on what the night meant to the comics industry, I asked various comic book creators to offer up their thoughts on the Oscar results and what to take from the night's nominees and winners. It’s a good thing “Watchmen” lasts 163 minutes, because with all of the footage already launched onto the Internet -- in addition to countless "Watchmen" viral videos, "Watchmen" interviews and a My Chemical Romance music video -- any shorter film would be strapped for surprises. This time, a 3:16 clip from near the beginning of the movie has gone live, and readers of the comics will recognize it nearly frame-for-frame.

Zack Snyder introduces the excerpt as an “exclusive,” but whether this was an official leak or not, there is definitely an element of winking and nudging here, since having a trailer up on the YouTube stage is about as un-exclusive as a piece of video can get. Read More...

'Scott Pilgrim' Mo-Cap

The new photo, posted in Wright's photo blog yesterday, depicts a pair of people clad in the mo-cap suits often used for digital animation of actors. While "Scott Pilgrim" actor Brandon Routh previously announced that the film would blend live-action with animation, O'Malley subsequently told MTV that Routh's comments were "blown out of proportion" with regard to the amount of animation in the film. During Saturday's post-"Spoilers" Q&A with "Watchmen" director Zack Snyder, the discussion turned to the story's co-creator, Alan Moore, and his famous dislike (to put it mildly) for the Hollywood adaptations of his works. According to Snyder, the subject came up early on in the "Watchmen" conversation -- and the answers he received didn't make the job any easier.

"When I came on the project, [Moore] had already said, 'I don't want anything to do with Watchmen. No one call me,'" Snyder told the MTV "Spoilers" audience, adding that one of his first "Watchmen"-related conversations involved him asking, "When do we get to call Alan?" Read More...

Emily BluntAfter a flurry of recent speculation surrounding "Iron Man 2" and the involvement of actors Emily Blunt, Scarlett Johansson, Eliza Dushku and Mickey Rourke, director Jon Favreau might have cleared the air about the status of at least two of those actors last night.

"On E!'s post show at the red carpet of some party, Jon Favreau said that Fox exercised its option on Emily Blunt, and that she definitely won't be in 'Iron Man 2,'" reported a Playlist reader. The option mentioned refers to Blunt's casting alongside Jack Black in "Gulliver's Travels," which is likely to endanger her "Iron Man 2" role. Read More...
