'Diesel Sweeties'Anyone following MTV Splash Page on Twitter already knows that I spent the last three days in Western Massachusetts at Webcomics Weekend, the first-ever convention organized by -- and specifically focusing on -- webcomic creators and their work. The event was organized by "Octopus Pie" creator Meredith Gran, and hosted at the Easthampton complex where several of the 'Net's most popular webcomic creators have their studios.

With hundreds of fans and creators attending the event, there was more than enough for recent converts and longtime fans to see, hear and do during the two-day convention, and enough evidence to suggest that this first Webcomics Weekend event could indeed become the first of many down the road.

For those who weren't able to attend (registration was free, but organizers had to cap the list after the first 700 attendees signed up), here's a quick recap of some highlights from the weekend, as well as some webcomics with a presence at the show that you might want to add to your regular reading list. Sam RaimiBy Josh Wigler, Additional Reporting By Rodrigo Perez

While the official word has yet to be announced, it's hardly a secret that Mickey Rourke is set to play the villainous Whiplash in "Iron Man 2" alongside Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Don Cheadle as a recast James Rhodes and, of course, Robert Downey Jr. as ol' Shellhead himself. What some of you might have missed is that Rourke was also rumored to be up for a villainous role in "Spider-Man 4" -- and, apparently, you wouldn't have been the only one to miss that news.

MTV News caught up with "Spider-Man 4" director Sam Raimi at the South By Southwest festival this past weekend to ask him about the Rourke rumor. And Raimi sounded just as surprised as anyone by the news that the Oscar-nominated actor was mentioned in connection with the web-slinger's next turn on the big screen.

"Really?" Raimi asked MTV News. "Where did you hear that?" Read more...

'Suicide Squad'When it was announced in February that DC/Warner Bros had set its sights on the supervillain team-up series "Suicide Squad" as one of the next properties to get the big-screen treatment, I spoke with the "Squad" creator John Ostrander to get some thoughts on the series and which characters were must-have cast members. Along with giving us the lowdown on the characters he considered a necessity for a proper "Suicide Squad" film, Ostrander also shared some thoughts on the story he thinks would provide a proper introduction to the cast of unwilling heroes.

"Some fans have suggested that the first storyline, trying to keep the Jihad from launching a terrorist attack, would make a good storyline [for the film]," Ostrander told MTV News. "I don't think they'll adapt any actual storylines but that story could be a good model of what makes the Squad work." Read more...

'Tintin'A couple of weeks back, we brought you the report that acclaimed director Steven Spielberg had finished a month of "performance-capture shooting" for "The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn," and was shipping his work off to his partner (but not "co-director") on the project, Peter Jackson (he of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy fame). Yet while a Spielberg/Jackson team-up could basically be considered "geek crack," the question remains: how do two insanely-acclaimed directors work together on such a project, not to mention the fact that their home-bases are literally half a world away?

Those questions were answered today in a rather informative piece in the Los Angeles Times, which looked at the process of filming the first in a planned series of three films based on the classic European comics character, and also updated fans anxiously anticipating Tintin et Milou's big-screen debut on the status of the film. 'The Phantom'In December, we brought you news that classic comic strip hero The Phantom would be returning to the big screen thanks to an Australian film company, producer Bruce Sherlock, and writer Tim Boyle. However, now it looks like he'll be getting the small-screen treatment too, thanks to the Sci-Fi (soon to be renamed SyFy) channel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "The Phantom" is getting a fresh take in a Sci-Fi miniseries. Rather than be daunted by the character's past cinematic failures, producer Robert Halmi Jr. sees it as a chance to redefine the character. Read more...

'Green Lantern'It's been yet another five days of breakneck news here at Splash Page, as Wolverine, Green Lantern, The Goon and...Stephen Colbert?!...all jockeyed for headline supremacy. Here's a quick trip through the week in case you couldn't keep up.

- Ryan Reynolds lived up to Deadpool's reputation of being the "Merc with a Mouth," telling fans that he was, indeed, the mystery mutant in the final "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" trailer, and that his character will eventually become the (busted) familiar face we've come to love.

- We caught a glimpse of the David Fincher-produced "The Goon" animated feature film, and were also treated to a first look at what's sure to be the most brutal (in a great way) crossover to ever hit comic shops -- "The Goon vs. Dethklok!" In a word -- METAL!

- After news broke that "Green Lantern" would begin filming later this year in Australia, our message boards erupted when we asked who you thought would make the best Hal Jordan. However, that search might be over if rumors of Chris Pine landing the role can be believed.

But that wasn't all, folks! Read more...

'Battlestar Galactica: Final Five'Losing a favorite television show can be an emotional experience. As fans prepare to see off the SciFi Channel's Emmy award-winning series "Battlestar Galactica" with tonight’s two-hour series finale, many viewers might be left wondering just what the frak they'll do without their regular dose of deep-space drama. Leave it to comics to answer the call.

Dynamite Entertainment debuts the first issue of "Battlestar Galactica: The Final Five" next week, and the four-issue miniseries ties directly into the television series' much-anticipated final episode. (Read on for what to expect from the series and a sneak peek at art from "Battlestar Galactica: Final Five.") Read more...

'Iron Man'After months of speculation and rumors, it looks like the boot jets are on for Marvel's armored avenger. Between picking up stars Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson for presumably pivotal roles and talk of a realized shooting schedule, things seem on track for the "Iron Man 2" May 7, 2010 release date. Of course, there's still the matter of getting the stars ready to roll.

"IM2" Director Jon Favreau told EW's Hollywood Insider at the premier of "I Love You Man" this week that he's preparing his stars to transition back into Marvel's film universe -- specifically leading man Robert Downey Jr. who's been busy playing detective in Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes."

"I'm getting the old-timers together again and introducing them to new cast members. We're gonna shake the Sherlock outta Junior! I'm a little nervous because the first one set a high bar but we have put our all into this so far," said Favreau. Read more...
