Looks like Sony Pictures ignored Dr. Curt Connors' advice -- they've touched the black goo and now their "Spider-Man" franchise is officially spinning off into the realm of a certain sinister symbiote.
Sci Fi Wire is confirmed what has been widely rumored and reported the past few months -- a "Venom" movie is officially in the works at Sony. Additionally, "Zombieland" writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are set to pen the screenplay, but don't expect the pair to talk about the project.
"We're under strict orders on 'Venom,'" Wernick told reporters. "We can't talk about it. It's just super secret."
Well, so much for confirming Carnage's rumored involvement. However, Wernick and Reese are longtime fans of the venomous villain, so would they really pass up the opportunity to pit the two symbiotes against each other?
It would appear that the writing duo isn't necessarily going for the obvious route, as they've done their fair share of research.
"We read ['Venom'] growing up, but we were not experts," said Reese. "We certainly know the mythology of Venom, but went back and learned more when it became clear that we could actually get this job."
As fans themselves, Reese and Wernick are aware of the enormous fan pressure -- and skepticism -- about a "Venom" solo project.
"I'm terrified," Reese laughed. "It's source material that everybody knows and everybody's familiar with and everybody loves. There's a burden on you to meet the expectations of people. A lot of people are curious about Venom."
Even with the psychopathic alien supersuit out of the bag, there's still plenty of questions about the "Venom" film. Will Topher Grace reprise his role from "Spider-Man 3," or is Sony looking for a new leading man? Are they sticking closer to the villain's comic book roots as a rough-and-tough bulky character?
Don't forget the earlier report that Mickey Rourke was approached for "Spider-Man 4" -- perhaps the "Iron Man 2" star was actually looking at an Eddie Brock film rather than the upcoming Sam Raimi-directed sequel.
Now that's a symbiote we'd love to take on!
UPDATE: SuperHeroHype reports that the "Venom" duo has already handed in their first draft of the script, and the pair offered up a few comments on their creative process for the project.
