Edgar Wright's "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" has assembled its cast, its band Sex Bob-Omb, and an intriguing website of updates, but Universal now appears to be courting possible partners for merchandising -- meaning awesome Scott Pilgrim toys could be on the way.
Universal's Products division will be vetting candidates for potential Scott Pilgrim "apparel and accessories, electronic accessories, collectible figures, novelty, stationery and social expressions," according to License Magazine. Whether those "collectible figures" exclusively take on realistic actor-likenesses for the film's characters will remain to be seen, but there is plenty of potential for some bombastic toys in the comics series' books.
The "Scott Pilgrim" cast includes Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim), Alison Pill (Kim Pine), Brandon Routh (Todd Ingram), Kieran Culkin (Wallace Wells) and Chris Evans (Lucas Lee), among several other big names. The licensing news also mentions actor Jason Schwartzman among the members of the cast, though his role in the film remains a mystery.
If nothing else, we might see the first ever Michael Cera action figure come out of this with ridiculous evil-ex-boyfriend-fighting powers, the likes of which have never been tested on the collectible toy market before. Wright's reportedly super-ambitious fight scenes, hybrids of classic kung-fu and tasteful CGI accents, should offer a healthy stock of powers and incredible feats suitable for toys.
Apparel, meanwhile, may be a bit more of a challenge, given that Scott Pilgrim is one of the laziest dressers known to man -- though a couple nice graphic tees will probably be fine. Also, if I could just put this out there, a serviceable Sex Bob-Omb guitar controller for my XBox 360 would be great. If you're a video game controller manufacturer, no need to thank me; just get to pitching.
