The comics crossover with Broadway looms ever closer as "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" continues casting its musical superheroes, villains and, of course, its Mary Jane Watson.
Last month, we heard from the actress once rumored to be a lock for the role, Evan Rachel Wood, who told MTV News "nothing's definite" about her playing the object of Peter Parker's affection. So, with active casting for the role underway around the country, we went straight to director Julie Taymor for the scoop on who could be uttering the famous line, "Face it, Tiger -- you just hit the jackpot!"
"We're in casting, so it's not that I want to cast a known or an unknown, it's just finding the right person," Taymor told MTV News. "It's a huge part -- a difficult part."
As for the on-again, off-again status of Wood as the musical's female lead, Taymor said "it's not scheduling" that's holding up the casting. The celebrated director then grinned and shrugged, adding, "It's just in negotiations at the moment. It's purely that sort of stuff right now."
While Taymor wasn't certain who she'd be directing opposite her spider-bitten lead (or who that lead might be at this point), she did say that Spider-Man's musical adventure will share some characteristics with Sam Raimi's live-action films.
"What sam did so beautifully was, he took the story from the comic books -- so our source is the same," said Taymor. "Yet, because we're trying to put the entire oeuvre into a two-and-a-half hour, one-night piece, we don't just tell the Green Goblin story or this or that, we have to get the whole thing into that evening."
"Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" will open on Broadway in 2010.
What do you think of Taymor's comments about Sam Raimi's spidey movies and how they compare to the musical? Hope negotiations pan out and Evan Rachel Wood becomes Mary Jane Watson? Sound off in the comment section!
