Marvel's god of thunder will indeed be matching wits with everyone's favorite trickster in the live-action "Thor" movie -- but in a bait-and-switch worthy of the ol' Norse villain himself, it looks like the studio has surprised everyone with its choice of an actor to play Loki.
Following on the heels of this weekend's big news regarding Chris Hemsworth being cast as the lead in "Thor," Nikki Finke reports on her Deadline Hollywood Daily blog that Tom Hiddleston will be playing the role of Loki in Marvel Studios' live-action "Thor" movie. The award-winning British actor is fairly unknown in the US, but co-starred with "Thor" director Kenneth Branagh in his BBC series "Wallander."
The Hiddleston casting comes as a bit of a surprise, given that Josh Hartnett's name has long been tossed around as the likely actor to bring Loki to the big screen. Read more...

FROM MTV MOVIES: Luke Goss played such a badass in "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" that he's up for two MTV Movie Awards come May 31: Best Villain and Best Fight. While he thinks he has a pretty good shot at Best Fight, he wouldn't mind losing the Best Villain trophy to a certain "Dark Knight" star.
"The late, great Heath Ledger! That's beyond tough competition," said Goss, who played Prince Nuada in the "Hellboy" sequel. "It's fun just to be nominated. He did a God-given performance. I think he should get it. He will get it. He should win given his performance. I think he's got everyone in his camp. I hope he wins it."
But Goss isn't willing to give away all his awards. He's also up for Best Fight, along with "Hellboy" star Ron Perlman, and given how much work he dedicated to the fighting in the film, he hopes he has a better shot at that one.

While the news broke today that Fox had canceled "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" after two seasons, there were also some beginnings announced today to balance out the endings. The network released its 2009-2010 programming schedule, and there are a few items that should interest comic fans immensely.
First and foremost is the announcement of an official premiere date for "Human Target," the series based on the DC/Vertigo comics and starring Mark Valley ("Fringe") as a bodyguard who masquerades as his clients in order to draw out the bad guys. The first episode will air on Sunday, Jan. 17, at 8 PM EST. Read more...

FROM MTV.COM: The first breakout star from this month's blockbuster "Star Trek" reboot is an actor who only appears in the movie's first 10 minutes. Chris Hemsworth, who plays James T. Kirk's heroic but doomed father, has just been cast in the title role of director Kenneth Branagh's highly anticipated Marvel Comics adaptation, "Thor."
The big-budget film about the flying, hammer-wielding Norse god of thunder is set to film in August for a scheduled May 2011 release.
According to DeadlineHollywoodDaily.com, which first broke the news, Branagh and Marvel initially rejected the 25-year-old Hemsworth before giving him a second chance to read for the part. Other actors reportedly up for the role included Alexander Skarsgård ("Generation Kill"), Charlie Hunnam ("Sons of Anarchy") and Hemsworth's young brother Liam ("Knowing").

FROM MTV MOVIES BLOG: On the eve of “Terminator Salvation’s” release this week, Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello brings word that Fox has officially canceled the struggling “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” which concluded its second season in April with a questions-raising. As a fan of the series, I had hoped Fox would capitalize on the positive buzz surrounding “Salvation” to give the series one last push, but it is not to be.
Television is usually outside of our coverage zone here on MTV Movies Blog, but the “Connor” cancellation is noteworthy because of the larger issues the show addressed with regards to the franchise. Since the “Chronicles” started, fans have understood that Lena Headey’s Sarah and Fred Dekker’s John existed in an alternate timeline. This is all thanks to a plot twisting pilot in which the duo, along with sexy Terminatrix Cameron (Summer Glau), jump a decade forward in time to escape yet another Connor-hunting Skynet initiative.

Speculation about who would play the lead role in Marvel Studios' live-action "Thor" movie has flown around the Internet lately, with no shortage of actors mentioning various levels of involvement in the casting process. Now it looks like the man who will wield the mighty hammer Mjolnir could be someone whose name we haven't heard thus far: Australian actor Chris Hemsworth.
According to Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily blog, "Thor" director Kenneth Branagh and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige chose Hemsworth after a back-and-forth process in which the 25-year-old actor was nixed early on, then given a second chance to read for the part.
"Once Marvel put him on tape, it was 'Oh my god,'" wrote Finke of Hemsworth, who can currently be seen as George Kirk in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" and will appear in Joss Whedon's "Cabin In The Woods" horror film. "Branagh came to town last week and saw the Chris test and made the final casting decision today." Read more...

Eminem's new album, "Relapse," hits shelves Tuesday, and it looks like the Punisher-themed promotional shoot he did for XXL Magazine a month ago isn't the only comics connection in the album. Among the various imagery in the album liner is a shot of Eminem decked out like the late Heath Ledger's award-winning interpretation of The Joker in "The Dark Knight."
The shot depicts Eminem with scarred grin, painted face and suit, holding a set of alphabet blocks that spell the word "KILL" -- and appears in a collage of psych charts, pills and prescription forms at the center of the booklet. You can check out a scan of the image after the jump. Read more...

It was a slower week this time around, with no clear-cut theme for the week's top stories. Here's how the last few days broke down:
- Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld gave MTV News the scoop on the upcoming adaptation of his Image Comics series "Youngblood," sharing plot details, characters and even the new writing team! Not only
- We gave "Lost" fans a comprehensive roundup of where to find their favorite island inhabitants around the comics world now that Season Five is over.
- Kevin Smith dropped by to tell us about "Batman: the Widening Gyre" and why it won't get in the way of Batman and Robin's love affair.
... And we're not done with the list yet! Read more...

Since 2004’s “Blade: Trinity,” one of Jessica Biel’s co-stars, Wesley Snipes, has been convicted of tax evasion, while another, Ryan Reynolds, has played a mutant in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and been granted his own “Deadpool” spin-off movie. But where’s Biel headed? Would she ever dive back into the world of comic books -- as Wonder Woman, perhaps, as was rumored a few years ago?
The answer is yes.
“If Wonder Woman had the right script and it was really powerful and emotional and interesting, I would be into that kind of thing,” Biel told MTV News while she was promoting her upcoming 1920s comedy of manners, “Easy Virtue.” Read more...

FROM MULTIPLAYER: Capcom's long-awaited, refurbished "Marvel Vs. Capcom 2" will finally see release this summer, and after getting a hands-on demo of the game this week, we were able to get a better idea of what fans can expect from the "New Age of Heroes" version of the popular brawler.
Since Capcom's deal with Marvel only allows for an upgraded version of the previous "Marvel Vs. Capcom 2," anyone hoping for extra characters or costumes will be disappointed -- but that doesn't mean "New Age of Heroes" is a carbon copy of its predecessor. Along with support for widescreen, 16x9 display, the new MvC2 will feature full high-definition backgrounds and, in my favorite addition, the ability to create a custom soundtrack.
For the rest of this "Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes" report, head over to Multiplayer.MTV.com.
Splash Page welcomes Ed Tadem to our cover artist family (our custom-designed theme up top).
