FROM MTV MOVIES: If you wanted to be nominated for Best Male Performance at this year's MTV Movie Awards, it was all about embracing your inner action hero — unless you're Zac Efron.

With four of the men — Christian Bale ("The Dark Knight"), Robert Downey Jr. ("Iron Man"), Shia LaBeouf ("Eagle Eye") and Vin Diesel ( "Fast & Furious") — nominated for action flicks, Efron stands alone, thanks to reprising his role as Troy Bolton in "High School Musical 3: Senior Year."

William Shatner's Tek War ChroniclesIf you were missing William Shatner in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek," it looks like you'll be able to make up for it in the coming months with "Tek War Chronicles," the new comic book series based on Shatner's best-selling "TekWar" science-fiction novels.

Written by Shatner and Scott Davis, "Tek War" tells the story of a man who returns to his futuristic world after serving four years of cryogenic stasis for a crime he didn't commit. "Tek War" publisher Bluewater Productions, whose "Political Power: Barack Obama" and "Puppy Power: Bo Obama" comics were recently featured on Splash Page, has provided us with the first look at "Tek War Chronicles" #1, which hits shelves near the end of June. Bat-MiteEarlier this month, I told you about the debut of one of my favorite ridiculous Batman villains, Crazy Quilt, on Cartoon Network's "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" animated series. Well, the creators of the series have managed to venture even further into the bizarre reaches of the Dark Knight's cast of supporting characters with this week's episode.

In a story titled "Legends of the Dark Mite," Batman will face one of the greatest (in my humble opinion) Bat-characters in the history of the Bat-universe: Bat-Mite. Read More...

Spider-ManIt’s a question on the minds of film buffs and comics fans alike, as they look forward to 2011’s return of Peter Parker to the big-screen: Who will he be fighting?

Recently, Sam Raimi revealed to us that he’s a mere four weeks away from reading a first draft of the “Spider-Man 4” script. And along with writer David Lindsay-Abaire, there are a few key elements they’re looking for in a potential villain.

“I’ve talked with David about a possible villain, villains, villain-ess,” the director grinned, being careful not to reveal genders or numbers in regards to Spidey’s nemesis. “[We’ve spoken] about who knows what Spider-Man’s conflicting personas would be.” Read More...

Spock: ReflectionsIt's been nearly a month since J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" made headlines for its impressive opening weekend, but Trekkies old and new still have plenty of unanswered questions when it comes to the rebooted franchise -- especially concerning the reimagined histories of its main characters. In that shared spirit of curiosity, IDW will release a new four-issue miniseries centering on Starfleet's favorite half-Vulcan entitled "Spock: Reflections" beginning in July.

Written by Scott Tipton and David Tipton ("Star Trek: Mirror Images") with art by David Messina ("Star Trek: Countdown"), "Reflections," aims to round out Spock's origins by shedding light on his activities leading up to the events of the film, specifically his childhood on the planet Romulus. Army of Darkness: Ash Saves ObamaMark my words: This is so crazy, it is absolutely, positively going to work. The latest comic to feature U.S. President Barack Obama will team him up with S-Mart Employee of the Month Ashley J. Williams -- the character better known as "Ash" to fans of the "Evil Dead" and "Army of Darkness" franchise.

Published by Dynamite Entertainment, "Army of Darkness: Ash Saves Obama" will feature Bruce Campbell's boomstick-toting alter ego teaming up with the new, comics-friendly Commander-in-Chief to thwart the Deadites' latest invasion of the mortal plane. Featuring a story by Elliot Serrano ("Xena/Army of Darkness"), interior art by Ariel Padilla and covers by "Spider-Man/Obama" artist Todd Nauck, the four-issue series unfolds at one of the scariest places on Earth: a crowded comic convention.

I spoke to Nauck about his latest foray into the world of Obama comics, and received a peek at his preliminary, penciled cover to "Ash Saves Obama" -- which I'm passing along to Splash Page readers here. Read More...

FROM MTV MOVIES: What happens when you take five women who gave five very different performances in five very different movies? Well, you get the five ladies nominated for Best Female Performance at this year's MTV Movie Awards.

Angelina Jolie brought the action with her role in "Wanted," Anne Hathaway used her comedy chops to get nominated in "Bride Wars," and the drama queens — Kristin Stewart in "Twilight," Kate Winslet in "The Reader" and Taraji P. Henson in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" — are all going head to head to try and secure themselves a trophy.

With an overwhelmingly strong Twilighter fanbase, it seems likely that Stewart will take home the prize come Sunday. But don't count out the fanboys who thought Jolie was the hottest femme fatale to grace the big screen since Uma Thurman in "Pulp Fiction."

Hawaiian DickNobody ever said getting an indie comic book to the big screen was easy. Unlike established franchises, creator-owned books tend to jump through more than a few hoops and can often see numerous options before realizing their cinematic potential.

Case in point: B. Clay Moore ("Billy Smoke") and Steve Griffin's supernatural detective tale, "Hawaiian Dick." Published by Image Comics, the tropical '50s noir property was picked up by New Line Cinema in 2004 and renewed again in 2006 with director Frank Coraci ("Click") attached to direct. The option has since lapsed, but according to Moore, it's not the end of the story. Read More...

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The WorldDirector Edgar Wright opens up on his latest "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" video blog with a peek at one of the film's big fight scenes. In what could very well be the scene actor Mark Webber described several months ago, the warehouse after-party scene looks like it will showcase Ramona Flowers' "+2 Against Girls" hammer in her showdown against Roxy Richter, played by Mae Whitman.

"There's a lot of dialogue and a lot of action," Wright explained in the video posted on the film's official website. "Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Mae Whitman have both been doing wonders in their parts." Read More...

Iron Man 2From donut shops and Tony Stark's workshop to yesterday's mysterious "Rasputin" set, there's been no shortage of shooting locations for the Jon Favreau-directed "Iron Man 2." Now, we can add one more destination to that ever-growing list: Edwards Air Force Base.

According to the base's official website, the "Iron Man 2" production team shot several scenes on location at the Air Force headquarters. The nature of May 11-13 shoot remains unknown, though comments from Favreau and an image of Robert Downey Jr. on location insinuate that there's a connection between the base and Stark himself.
