We're certainly disappointed that "Twilight" trumped both "The Dark Knight" and "Iron Man" at the MTV Movies Awards, but even we can't deny the rabid fascination with the vampire romance franchise -- though it looks like a particular vampire favorite has found some interest in the comic book world himself.
Unfortunately, ladies, we're not talking about Robert Pattinson. After all, he has a good thing going on as Edward Cullen. Instead, "Twilight" villain Cam Gigandet will make the leap onto the paneled page with a starring role in "Priest" based on the TokyoPop comic book series, says The Hollywood Reporter -- and he's taking his blood-sucking sensibilities with him.
Directed by Charles Stewart, "Priest" is set in a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires and follows a warrior priest who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece.
The priest, named Ivan Isaacs in the comic book series, will be played by actor Paul Bettany. Bettany was at one point rumored to play the Joker in "The Dark Knight," ultimately losing the role to the late Heath Ledger. Bettany's wife, actress Jennifer Connelly, also flirted with the comic book genre as Betty Ross in the first "Hulk" film.
Gigandet himself will play one of the film's vampires, though he'll be considerably less nefarious than his "Twilight" appearance. The actor will star as a young wasteland sheriff who is part vampire. His character partners with Bettany's priest in order to save the love of his life -- who happens to be Bettany's niece.
What say you, "Twilight" fans? Are you excited for Gigandet's latest role, are you pretty content to follow these vampire bad boys wherever they may roam?
