As much as Adam Savage, Jamie Hyneman and their "Build Team" of Kari Byron, Tory Belleci and Grant Imahara seem to appreciate superheroes, toppling fans' suspended disbelief doesn't seem to bother them one bit. Following their foray into super-powered phenomena, such as Spider-Man's arachnid origins, the Hulk's gamma-powered transformations and Namor's undersea breathing capacity, the "MythBusters" team continues to tackle the paneled powers of comic book characters this week on Discovery Channel.
Tonight's episode, "Curving Bullets," looks at the physics behind 2008's "Wanted," which may or may not debunk the powers of weavers.
Based on the comic by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones, the "Wanted" film adaptation condensed protagonist The Killer's broad assassination powers to a kind of mastery of firearms, allowing incredibly precise, seemingly steered shots. Angelina Jolie's Fox character best summed it up when she demanded Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) "curve the bullet."
Savage, Hyneman and their hardworking team look at every myth with a skeptical eye, putting together experiments designed to uncover the truth behind urban legends. Each myth is then confirmed, said to be plausible based on inconclusive testing or "busted" by testing impossible.
The system hasn't been very kind to comic book myths in the past, with Batman's famous grappling hook deemed a technological impossibility and most Marvel characters' mutations considered highly unrealistic. However, if Superman wanted to change into his costume in a phone booth, that's completely doable… providing he could find one in the present day.
The "MythBusters" Web site doesn't offer many clues regarding the outcome of "Curving the Bullet's" experiments, but does guarantee "guns galore and sonic booms aplenty!" something "Wanted" fans should appreciate.
