It's a fairly wide consensus in geekdom that nobody wants a new "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" film unless series mastermind Joss Whedon is allowed full creative control (or at least serious consultation privileges). But as it turns out, Whedon himself isn't all that interested.
Whedon spoke with Entertainment Weekly's PopWatch about the hotly-contested "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" film relaunch -- rumored to be an interpretation of the character that not only purports to ignore Whedon's continuity, but is being developed without Whedon's participation. Still, that's not to say that the producers behind the upcoming film didn't reach out to Whedon... eventually.
"I believe [the producers] did ultimately reach out to my agent after the news broke," Whedon said. "I think that's something better left untouched by me. So, I wish them luck."
PopWatch pithily added that the producers will need such luck, as their recent poll indicated that only three percent of readers would see a Whedon-less "Buffy" movie.
If the movie goes forward as planned, don't expect to see acclaimed Whedon creations Angel, Spike, Xander or Giles involved in the plot line -- but luckily for hardcore fans of the Buffyverse, you can continue following their adventures in the well-received "Buffy" comic books from Dark Horse, as well as the "Angel" series from IDW Publishing.
Nevertheless, you have to feel for Whedon on this one. Despite being one of the most widely-loved creators in television, film and comic books, the writer-director has had hard luck in the theaters. Possibly most notable, and certainly most relevant to Splash Page, is his failed attempt at bringing a live-action "Wonder Woman" film to the big screen -- a script that was ultimately turned down, despite almost universal praise from those who read it.
