Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' "Watchmen" wasn't the best-selling graphic novel in U.S. bookstores last month -- marking the first time it's been knocked out of the top spot since June 2008.
According to pop culture business site ICv2, "Watchmen" dropped to the #2 in the monthly report on bookstore graphic novel sales, replaced by Vol. 27 of Tite Kubo's "Bleach" manga. As always, sales of manga volumes like "Bleach" and "Naruto" dominated the month's rankings, but "Watchmen" wasn't the only comic book collection to factor into the report.
DC's "Final Crisis" hardcover, written by Grant Morrison (the subject of our recent series of video interviews by writer/musician Percy Carey), came in at #6, while Vol. 4 of Dark Horse Comics' "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series factored into sales at #18 overall.
With the director's cut of "Watchmen" hitting selected theaters July 17, and both the Blu-Ray and DVD versions of the film arriving a week later on July 25, sales of "Watchmen" are likely to spike once again -- but the book will certainly continue to face some heavy competition from popular manga titles.
What do you think of this month's graphic novel sales charts? Think "Watchmen" will return to the top spot?
