Last week's relatively small haul appears to have been the calm before the storm, as this week featured enough toys, comics and assorted swag to make my nine-year-old self weep out of sheer joy. Here's a quick crop of this week's batch (click on the image for the full photo):
And now, a breakdown of the highlights from this week's arrivals...
Clockwise from left:
- Vertigo sent over copies of "Madame Xanadu: Disenchanted" and "Northlanders: Book Two," which was a pleasant surprise. I'd been meaning to check out "Madame Xanadu" for a while now, as I own a bunch of the "Spectre" comics she was a regular feature in years ago. As for "Northlanders," Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly's viking saga wasn't really on my radar until I was sent a copy of issue #17, a standalone story that was like a procedural evaluation of viking brawls. I've been hooked ever since.
- As Movies Blog editor Adam Rosenberg reported earlier this week, we received a big ol' box of merchandise related to the upcoming "G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra" movie. Being the vulture that I am, I swooped in to grab the 12" Storm Shadow figure and the smaller Snake-Eyes "Paris Pursuit" action figure. Storm Shadow has a button that, when you push it, makes him say things like "be afraid" and "fear is a great motivator" -- and I'm pretty sure someone in my immediate vicinity will remove the batteries within the hour. But until then...
- I toured the local Mezco Toyz warehouse earlier this week as part of a story you'll see on Splash Page soon, and the crew there gave me one of the action figures based on their insectoid mascot, Gomez. It's actually a great, sturdy little figure, and comes with a martini glass, boombox, ray-gun and katana. Guess which accessories mine is holding!
- Image Comics sent over a copy of "Back to Brooklyn," which looks to be a bloody story by Jimmy Palmiotti and Garth Ennis. (And really, does either author ever write anything that isn't bloody?)
- I got my copy of "Wednesday Comics" #1. Did you? I absolutely love the way these comics look, though I'm willing to bet that the $4 price tag could prompt a big drop-off between the first and second issue. There's some absolutely mind-blowing art in this issue, though -- so it's worth checking out.
- Shout Factory sent over "The Middleman: The Complete Series" DVD set, which I believe hits shelves in the next few weeks I loved the Viper Comics series by "Lost" writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach, and enjoyed the few episodes of this live-action adaptation that I caught on TV. They're reading the script for the final, never-filmed episode of the series during Comic-Con, which should be a good time and remind everyone why this series was so much fun.
That's it for this week! See you Monday!
