In last week's poll, I asked readers to vote on the "Batman 3" rumors they wished were true. From Cher playing Catwoman and Christopher Nolan exiting the franchise to Philip Seymour Hoffman playing The Penguin and Christian Bale taking his growl elsewhere, there's been no shortage of rumors surrounding the next installment of the Batman film franchise. And no rumor has been without its share of fans, either.
When all the votes were tallied, however, the margin of votes between the most popular rumor and the next wish-it-was-true option was one of the largest in any of our polls thus far. And while the winner isn't much of a surprise, the support for some of the other might raise a few eyebrows (and cause some heart palpitations) among the Batman faithful.
After all the votes were tallied, two rumors that originated with "Batman Begins" actor Michael Caine proved to be the most popular of the "Batman 3" predictions made thus far. Caine's suggestion in September 2008 that Johnny Depp was tagged to play The Riddler in the next Batman movie proved popular with fans -- to the tune of more than 57 percent of the total votes. It was so popular, in fact, that we had to ask Depp about it when we interviewed him recently.
Following up on Depp/Riddler was the other half of Caine's prediction -- that award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman would play The Penguin. It was a big step down from Depp to Hoffman, though, with the latter rumor only pulling in a meager 16 percent of the votes. In fact, the rumor that Rachel Weisz could play Batman's feline-fixated nemesis, Catwoman, earned nearly as many votes as the Hoffman/Penguin prediction.
It's worth noting that Hoffman could have some competition among fans, though. The rumor that "Sideways" and "American Splendor" actor Paul Giamatti might be up for the The Penguin managed to finish a strong fourth in the voting with 6 percent of the total votes.
Should Shia LaBeouf play Robin? A healthy 3 percent of voters think so! Another 2 percent think Eddie Murphy would make a great Riddler, too. Heck, even the idea of Cher playing Catwoman had some support. (Only 1 percent of votes -- but still... wow.)
"I think an Eddie Murphy Riddler would be excellent -- he does dual personality well(Bowfinger) + is excellent when restrained," wrote Twitter user lonelypond.
Echoing the support for Murphy, MTV.com reader ghettoManga wrote: "i'd actually like to see eddie murphy work with a great actor's director. he has the talent and charisma of a great actor, but not very good decision-making... depp as the riddler would be pretty good too..."
It also seems worth pointing out that the rumor that seems most likely to occur is also the rumor no one wants to see happen. Multiple sources -- including Christian Bale himself -- have cast doubt on the likelihood of Nolan returning for another shot at Batman, but according to the poll, less than 1 percent of fans want to even consider the notion. In the end, less than a dozen readers voted for Nolan's departure as the rumor they most wanted to see realized.
