Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's WildStorm series "Red" stirred up speculation several months ago when Bruce Willis entered headlines as a candidate to star. This weekend, Morgan Freeman joined the "Die Hard" actor as a possible cast member as well.
"It does indeed look real promising, and I'm very hopeful," Hamner wrote on his blog in response to the Variety story. "But I have to point out that, to my knowledge, neither actor is a done deal, and even if I'm wrong and they are, it doesn't mean the movie will even get made."
DC exec Gregory Noveck will be overseeing "Red" as exec producer, according to the story, with "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian also on board, with sibling team Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber are writing the script.
The three-issue series from 2003 and 2004 follows an ex-black-ops CIA agent, Paul Moses, who is being targeted by a high-tech assassin. Freeman has already played around with comics-spawned technology in "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight," and "Wanted," so the source material wouldn't be much of a stretch for him to slip into.
Hamner emphasized that while details aren't finalized, he still think the news of Morgan's interest is "pretty damn cool."
Do you think Freeman and Willis would be a good pairing to star in "Red"? Do you share Hamner's hopeful skepticism about the early state of the film? Sound off with your thoughts in the comment section below!
