Scarlett JohanssonA couple of big news items from Marvel and DC earned top honors among this week's most popular stories, but there were a few stories popping up about other publishers' projects that generated some buzz, too. Here's how the week looked:

- How will Ryan Reynolds jumping into the "Green Lantern" lead affect "Deadpool"? We examined what it could mean, and you made the story our top story of the week!

- The first images of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in "Iron Man 2" set the 'Net on fire!

- A real-life brawl that put Superman and Batman impersonators up against the New York Police Department occurred right outside Splash Page HQ! (We're pretty sure it was a publicity stunt for "Public Enemies," though.) Read more...

I didn't have much time to sort through this week's swag, but the two items I am calling out this week should more than make up for it. Check 'em out:

Long before Ryan Reynolds appears in the live-action "Green Lantern" movie, DC's Emerald Knight will on screen in animated form in the upcoming, feature-length film "Green Lantern: First Flight." Along with actor Chris Meloni voicing Hal Jordan, the all-star cast includes "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" alum Juliet Landau (as Labella), Michael Madsen (Kilowog), Tricia Helfer (Boodikka) and Victor Garber (Sinestro). And now you can see the first four minutes of the film exclusively here on Splash Page! Check it out:

While the clip gives you a look at how Jordan becomes the Green Lantern of Sector 2814, fans who are heading to Comic-Con International next week don't have to wait long to see the rest of the "First Flight" story. The entire film will be screened on Thursday, July 23, at the convention.

"Green Lantern: First Flight" will hit DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, July 28.

Jonah HexAs one of the co-writers of DC Comics' "Jonah Hex" series, Jimmy Palmiotti understandably has high hopes for the Warner Bros. live-action film adaptation. Luckily for the writer-artist, any doubts that he may have had were quelled by a visit to the production in which he not only saw two "major scenes" being filmed, but also had a close encounter with the iconic character brought to life.

"We get to the set and there on horseback is [Josh] Brolin in full Jonah Hex makeup with the hat and the coat on," Palmiotti described in an interview with MTV News. "He just walks by us slowly on the horse and looks down at us, and I have to say -- he looks amazing."

While on the set of "Jonah Hex," Palmiotti and co-writer Justin Gray met the film's star and his on-screen nemesis, John Malkovich. The actors spoke with the comic book veterans about both the movie and the source material, and found that their work wasn't being ignored by the cast and crew. In fact, "Jonah Hex" readers should find some very specific call-outs to the comic peppering the movie. Read more...

FROM MOVIES BLOG: The computer animated fantasy "9," from Oscar-nominated short director Shane Acker, has me pretty excited. For starters, the art style is wild. There's also the not-insignificant fact that Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (director of "Wanted") produced the thing. Have you seen anything from it yet? No? Check this craziness out:

Chloe Moretz"Kick-Ass" fans, don't be fooled by the images of Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl circulating around the 'Net -- the father-daughter vigilante team of Nicolas Cage and Moretz will indeed dispense brutal justice while wearing their costumes from the comic.

In an interview with MTV News, "Kick-Ass" director Matthew Vaughn said promotional images of the film's pre-teen vigilante sporting a schoolgirl outfit and gun don't actually depict her costume for the film, and like her "Kick-Ass" co-stars Aaron Johnson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, she'll have a costume modeled after her comic book counterpart.

"That's not her costume. No one's seen her costume yet," Vaughn told MTV News of the various images that have appeared online. "That's just part of a plan to take some people out. That's her alter ego." Read more...

Astro Boy

MTV News recently had the chance to visit Imagi Studios where the finishing touches are being put on “Astro Boy,” set to hit theaters October 23.

Though the character isn’t quite as recognizable to US audiences, “Astro Boy” is one of the most enduring Japanese pop icons, dating back to his 1952 debut in the manga by Osamu Tezuka. The film tells the story of a scientist, Tenma (Nicolas Cage) who replaces his lost son with a powerful robot (Freddie Highmore), who must then come to terms with his own identity as both a child and a hero. It really is a great time to be a fan of comic book movies. Along with being treated to brilliant films like "Iron Man," "Hellboy" and "The Dark Knight" in theaters, there's no shortage of fan-made movies and trailers around the 'Net that offer a taste of what some of your favorite comics or storylines would look like if they made the jump to the big screen.

We'll be taking a look at some of those fan-made movies, trailers and mash-ups each week here on Splash Page, and get some thoughts from the films' creators about why they made the jump from comic book fan to amateur filmmaker.

So, let's get straight to this week's video: "MARVEL: CIVIL WAR"

After the jump, check out an interview with the creator of "Marvel: Civil War." Read more...

Blackest NightIt was difficult to find someone who wasn't buzzing about the first issue of DC's big "Blackest Night" crossover event this week. Everyone was praising the kickoff of Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis' brewing war among the Green Lanterns and a variety of other color-coordinated cosmic factions.

I have to admit that the compliments seemed well-deserved, as I had no problem jumping into "Blackest Night" myself despite not being entirely caught up with recent "Green Lantern" story arcs. I am a bit disappointed that I didn't get one of these cool Power Rings that came with the issues I keep hearing about!

Anyways, here's what some Splash Page readers had to say (via Twitter) about their favorite issues in this week's comics. Feel free to add your own thoughts to the mix, but remember: I'm asking for your favorite comics of the week, so let's focus on the positive! Read more...

We've presented several clips already from an interview with best-selling comics author Grant Morrison conducted by Eisner-nominated writer, musician and producer Percy Carey (a.k.a. MF Grimm), but I feel pretty safe saying that we've saved the best for last. In this final interview segment, Morrison addresses why we haven't seen a movie based on his massively popular, surreal comic book series "The Invisibles" -- and why he thinks it might be better off as a video game instead.

"Yeah, I'd love to see it, but it's not happening anytime soon," said Morrison. "I kind of want to do a different take on it, because obviously when 'The Matrix' came out, it was covering a lot of similar areas. There were bald guys in fetish amounts doing kung-fu." Read more...
