What is it about the "Batman" film franchise that breeds ridiculous rumors? The latest in a long line of unlikely casting gossip has "Jennifer's Body" star Megan Fox suiting up as Catwoman for the third installment of Christopher Nolan's "Batman" films. But is it any more ridiculous than some of the previous rumors that have made the rounds?
[UPDATE: Check out our gallery of altered images featuring Megan Fox as Catwoman!]
The report surfaced earlier today in notoriously unreliable British tabloid The Sun, which simply stated—without any attributed sources, anonymous or otherwise—that "Megan Fox has signed up to play Catwoman in the next Batman movie." And while there doesn't appear to be even the slightest glimmer of truth to the report, it still isn't the most ridiculous casting rumor we've heard thus far.
Or is it?
Both Paul Giamatti and Phillip Seymour Hoffman have had their names connected to the role of The Penguin, with the latter rumor attributed to a misunderstanding by "Dark Knight" actor Michael Caine. Johnny Depp and Eddie Murphy have each been named as potential actors for the part of The Riddler, with the former another product of Caine's casting miscue and the latter another unsourced casting "scoop" from The Sun. In the rumor, the tabloid paired Murphy with actor Shia LaBeouf in the role of Robin.
It's Batman's feline-fixated nemesis Catwoman, though, who seems to be generating the most motion on the rumor mill. In what is possibly the most unbelievable story of them all, yet another British tabloid named Cher as the likely candidate for the role almost a year ago. Cher laughed off the rumor, but since then another name has been thrown into the mix as a potential Catwoman: Rachel Weisz.
Indeed, Megan Fox already has a lot of company in the pool of actors linked to potential "Batman 3" roles, so where does this latest unlikely rumor rank? Back in July, I asked readers to vote on which casting rumor they wished were true, and the Depp/Riddler pairing was the overwhelming winner.
So, does Fox/Catwoman offer Depp/Riddler some competition?
