Bringing a world established on the screen into the comic book medium is always a gamble. Sometimes you end up with stories that naturally evolve the universe and supplement the existing work (like Dark Horse Comics' various "Star Wars" series or IDW's "Star Trek" and "G.I. Joe" titles, for example), but more often than not, you end up with very forgettable tie-in comics.
We've already seen a wealth of movies arrive on the big screen this year that seem like they'd be a good fit for the comics world, with plenty more to come in the second half of 2009. From genre films with comics-friendly creators to established, popular properties that have yet to make the jump to comics, there could very well be some gems out there—but which ones?
I've listed some of the top films I think have some comics potential, and I want to know which one of them you think is best suited for adaptation and exploration as a comic book. If your favorite isn't listed here, feel free to vote "Other" and tell me which film you think would make a great comic! Read more...

Who would have thought there were Quentin Tarantino fans working in comics? Surprisingly enough, "Inglourious Basterds" pops up in more than one writer's tweets this morning in the Twitter Report. "Batman: Arkham Asylum" and "District 9" were right behind Tarantino in recent entertainment topics, but to find out which Bat-universe writer is already playing through the game in her head, I definitely recommend a thorough reading of today's report.
The Twitter Report would also like to wish comics-writing marathoner and monolithic industry personality Brian Michael Bendis a happy birthday today, even though his peers on Twitter have already beat me to it many times over.
To check out what they had to say, as well as Neil Gaiman's "Metamorpho" theme song, check out the Twitter Report for August 18, 2009. Read more...

Although not based on a comic book, last year's Will Smith-starring "Hancock" experienced all the success of a pre-established superhero. As a result, many are wondering if and when a sequel to the project might come about, including co-star Charlize Theron herself.
Peter Berg, who directed the movie, spoke with Sci Fi Wire about a potential "Hancock 2" and what that film could entail. As the first installment dealt with superpowered deities in the form of Smith and another character whose identity will be revealed after the jump—yep, that's a spoiler warning!—Berg thinks a sequel would expand upon that Godly mythology.
"There might be another god out there," Berg said. "Might be another." Read more...

Earlier this month, I told you about the upcoming comic book biography of "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer hitting shelves in November—timed to coincide with the premiere of "New Moon" in theaters, in fact.
The latest in Bluewater Productions' line of "Female Force" comics, the Meyer bio will hit shelves in both a standard-size issue and a limited-run, 32-page version featuring a custom, alternate cover debuting exclusively here on Splash Page!
If you're already planning to pick this one up, keep in mind that you won't be able to order the limited-edition "Female Force: Stephenie Meyer" issue at your local comic shop. The limited-edition format will only be available via Dazzled By Twilight, a retailer in Forks, Washington (the real-life town where "Twilight" is set—but you already knew that). Don't worry, though, fans who can't make the pilgrimage to Forks can order the comic online, as well as a poster-sized print of the cover. Read more...

When Tony Stark soars onto screens in next year's "Iron Man 2," he'll have to contend with Mickey Rourke's fierce Russian weapons-maker Whiplash. But as tough as he is, there's no question that Stark's Mark III armor is significantly more souped up than what we've seen of Rourke's whip-clad prison rags... but what if we haven't seen the full extent of Whiplash's armor?
A clue could lie in Marvel's upcoming "Iron Man Vs. Whiplash" comic book, a four-issue miniseries announced on Marvel.com that sees the "Iron Man 2" villain pitted against the heroic Tony Stark. The series is written by Marc Guggenheim and Brannon Bragga with art from Phil Briones, but it's the Whiplash character design from Marko Djurdjevic that could foretell the villain's eventual appearance in "Iron Man 2." There are some "Smallville" news bits floating around today that will undoubtedly have the fan community talking. The show, which is apparently far from over, is introducing a pair of exciting villains in General Zod and Metallo.
Despite this potential awesomeness, there are some other characters allegedly coming to the show that are just... well, wonderful.
The good news is that TV Guide has the first official production still of Brian Austin Green as Metallo, and he looks pretty darn cool. The weird news? The Wonder Twins might be heading into Clark Kent's orbit, too. Read more...

Last summer's "Iron Man" made waves when it snuck in an surprise visit from Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury after the ending credits, planting the seeds for the upcoming "Thor," "The First Avenger: Captain America," and "Avengers" films. So when MTV News caught up with "Iron Man 2" star Don Cheadle, the question of an after-credits surprise had to be asked.
Spoiler alert: Cheadle is hilarious.
“Thor and Hulk both make an appearance in this film. They work at a diner," Cheadle told MTV News, “You heard it hear first. Thor is actually in the movie. He eats Tony Stark. He consumes him into his godlike belly and spews him into the world. He turns into stars actually.” Read more...

It's a fun week for comics with movie and television ties. From impressive adaptations of much-anticipated films to surreal team-ups so crazy they just might work, here are some of the books I'm checking out this week—and you should, too!
"ARMY OF DARKNESS: ASH SAVES OBAMA" #1 (Dynamite Entertainment): Confession time: I've been offering "Ashley J. Williams," the name of Bruce Campbell's iconic, chainsaw-wielding hero from the "Evil Dead" movies, as my write-in candidate for most minor and major elections for almost a decade now. If I don't know the nominees, who better for the office than a guy who's saved the world from the Deadite scourge countless times?
In this new Dynamite series, my vision for a better tomorrow kinda/sorta finds a home, with U.S. President Barack Obama visiting a comic convention targeted for Deadite invasion, leaving the Commander-in-Chief of the Boomstick Brigade as Obama's only hope. Like I've said before, it's so crazy, it's going to work. Fact. (And did I mention the amazing Todd Nauck cover?) Read more...

Last week's announcement that the brilliant Robert Kirkman comic book series "The Walking Dead" was headed to AMC as a television series directed by Frank Darabont ("The Shawshank Redemption," "The Mist") was easily one of my favorite stories of the week. The combination of Kirkman's bleak, character-driven story with Darabont's considerable talent at bringing exactly those sort of stories to the screen seems like the perfect match—but it's a project that almost went in an entirely different direction, according to a recent report.
According to BleedingCool, "Hellboy" (and "The Hobbit") director Guillermo Del Toro was originally attached to bring Kirkman's tale of life after of the zombie apocalypse to the small screen. Instead of landing at AMC, the series was proposed as an HBO project, intended to be a sister series to vampire drama "True Blood." Read more...

The release date for the "Batman: Arkham Asylum" video game is nearly upon us, and while we're lucky enough to have received a copy in the mail last week (along with an official Arkham Asylum straitjacket), we're not allowed to post a review until this Friday, August 21. However, we can show you this new trailer for the game, which offers a nice peek at some of the gadgets Batman gets to use during the game.
Keep an eye on Splash Page later this week for my review, as well as more coverage for the comics-savvy masses.
What do you think of the new trailer? Sound off in the comment section or on Twitter!
Splash Page welcomes Ed Tadem to our cover artist family (our custom-designed theme up top). Currently working on the forthcoming "Avengers" animated series, Tadem's work can also be seen in the "Jackie Karma" issues of Image's "'76," and in "Pop Gun, Volume 1." Ed Tadem can be found online at EdTadem.com.
