It's a good time to be a Vertigo Comics fan, what with "The Losers" hitting theaters next year and a planned "Fables" television adaptation in the works, among other projects—including the just-announced "Midnight, Mass" television series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the short-lived "Midnight, Mass" comic book series has been acquired by NBC as a new television series. Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, who previously collaborated on the (also short-lived) "Pushing Daisies," will write and executive produce the comic book-based series. Read more...

With all of last week's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" sequel news, we asked readers who they'd most like to see in the follow-up to this year's solo debut for Hugh Jackman and his Marvel Comics character.
After all the ballots were counted, the top two characters were separated by less than a dozen votes, and both of them seem more than up to the task of taking on Wolverine when he heads to Japan—or anywhere else, for that matter. Here's how the poll broke down, and why the votes went the way they did, according to readers:
Tentacled Russian villain Omega Red won the poll with 33 percent of the total votes, but recurring Wolverine foe Silver Samurai was close behind with 32 percent of the final tally. With Wolverine originally making his debut in a brawl with the Hulk, Marvel's Green Goliath also managed a respectable number of votes, and smashed his way to 18 percent of the total. Read more...

We said it wouldn't be long until Matthew Vaughn's "Kick-Ass" adaptation found itself a distributor, and now it looks like we were right! After a packed San Diego Comic-Con house gave the first footage from the film a positive reception, it was revealed that three studios were vying for the opportunity to bring the project to theaters. Now, we have a winner.
Lionsgate has acquired the U.S. and Canadian rights to the action/comedy based on the hit series by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.
“Matthew Vaughn is an amazing talent and a true original, and he has brought a whole new mindset to the action genre with 'Kick-Ass,'" said Jason Constantine, Lionsgate President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions. "'Kick-Ass' redefines the boundaries in terms of humor, action, story, character and tone—it’s the kind of movie that reminds us of why we go to the movies in the first place. Lionsgate is thrilled to bring KICK-ASS home to give it the next-generation launching pad it deserves." Read more...

We've already gotten our first glimpse of Zoe Saldana on the set of "The Losers," proving that the film is on track for its April 2010 release date. Now, a series of new photos is further cementing the progress of the Vertigo comic book adaptation.
Superhero Hype has posted several photos from the set of "The Losers," providing the first clear looks at Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Idris Elba as Clay and Roque, respectively.
The two actors are featured in a street scene beside a junked up yellow car, with Morgan's character aiming a gun at an unseen target. Additionally, Elba -- who seems suspiciously busy with his cell phone—is sporting a funky mohawk, a hairstyle that his stylish alter-ego Stringer Bell on "The Wire" would most likely disapprove of. In town to promote this weekend's debut of "District 9," filmmaker Peter Jackson shared some details about another project he's serving as producer for—and the sequel that he'll be getting behind the camera to direct.
"The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn" is based on the beloved comic strip with a global (and loyal) fanbase, and chronicles boy journalist Tintin's globe-trotting adventures. Jackson is serving as producer on the first film, with Steven Spielberg in the director's chair. The pair will reverse the roles for the sequel, and Jackson shared some details about where they're at with the current film and what fans can expect to see in the follow-up.
"[Spielberg]'s just finished his cut, which he's showing me when I get back home next week," Jackson told MTV News. Read more...

When David Lindsay-Abaire was brought on to rewrite James Vanderbilt's "Spider-Man 4" script, it was assumed that something didn't quite click with the first scribe's take. That assumption could still be true, but it's not stopping Vanderbilt from joining the web-slinging superhero for further outings.
Variety reports that James Vanderbilt has signed on to write "Spider-Man 5" and "Spider-Man 6" for Sony Pictures Entertainment in a move to shorten the lapse times between sequels of the franchise. Vanderbilt's work on the next two "Spider-Man" films will not only solve this problem, but he'll also get to enact his original plan to concoct an interconnecting story between the fifth and sixth movies. David Goyer is practically a household name in the geek community thanks to his work on "The Dark Knight," well-received comic book writing on series like "JSA," and the promise of his Green Arrow prison break film "Super Max." One of his earliest comic-to-screen properties, "Blade," has hit a bit of a stand-still in terms of further outings—but according to Goyer, another chapter could be on the horizon.
"It's been rumored over at New Line," Goyer told MTV News about the status of Marvel's number one vampire slayer. Speaking during a press event for his upcoming, time-bending, sci-fi television series "Flash Forward," Goyer said "there's been murmurings" of another "Blade" film. Read more...

This picture is of Crimson Dynamo, the only villain that's been confirmed for the "Iron Man 2" video game. But his inclusion does say a lot about how closely the game follows the events of the movie. In short: Not closely at all.
See, the main baddie in the movie is called Whiplash, and is based on an amalgam of a minor Iron Man villain of the same name and Crimson Dynamo, what with his Russian prison background. So having another dude in the movie called Crimson Dynamo seems a little redundant, no?

Another week, another pile of packages arriving at Splash Page HQ. Yesterday, I gave you a peek at our new home in the MTV News room (and wondered how much of the random stuff on my desk you could identify), today I'm posting some of the highlights from this week's crop of stuff to pile in, on and around the new desk!

From left to right, here are some of the interesting items from this week's stash:
- It was hard to miss Gene Simmons of KISS and his son, Nick Simmons, strolling around the floor at Comic-Con in San Diego this year—mainly due to the mob of security guards and onlookers that surrounded them. Nick was there to promote his new series from Radical Publishing, "Incarnate," which had its first issue hit shelves last week. Read more...
