Wizard of OzFor anyone who's read L. Frank Baum's original stories, Judy Garland's adventures in the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz" might come off a bit more musical and sentimental than the slightly darker events within the series' source material. Now, 70 years later, Baum's darker tone could resurface in a cinematic sequel starring Dakota Fanning ("Push") courtesy of producers Basil Iwanyk and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane.

According to the Daily Express Warner Brothers is planning a brand new Oz story following the present day adventures of Dorothy's granddaughter.

But fans shouldn't necessarily expect singing Lollipop Guilds in this incarnation. McFarlane indicates Fanning's potential Dorothy won't be played as the naïve pushover or sweet voice of innocence she's been presented as in previous incarnations. Read more...

When news of a "Superman" reboot first hit the internet, the word tossed in connection to the project was "darker," a tone that one would more readily attribute to Batman rather than the comparatively sunnier Man of Steel himself. But "Ninja Assassin" director James McTeigue, who is the subject of some interesting rumors about helming a "Superman" movie, told MTV News that a new film centering on the Last Son of Krypton should go down a darker route than its Bryan Singer-directed predecessor.

"I think that the culture has sort of changed a little bit around Superman," McTeigue suggested regarding a "Superman Returns" follow-up. "If you're going to do something with Superman, I think people would probably like something a little darker." Read more...

The LosersSo far, shots from the "Losers" set in Puerto Rico have revealed Jeffrey Dean Morgan waving a gun, flipped vehicles, and at least one big explosion. Writer Andy Diggle has even weighed in, helping to connect what readers of his comics are seeing to what originally occurred in the books. Now, a Spanish-language site appears to show another scene being filmed, featuring a helicopter hovering in front of an AIG building.

The sequence, featuring a Miami Police helicopter appears to take place in San Juan's banking district, according to El Nuevo Día, who posted a video and photo. Read more...

District 9Okay, so I'm officially floored by the results of this week's poll. The "Twilight" and "Avatar" juggernauts seem to have met their match in "District 9"—at least as far as comic book adaptations are concerned.

Last week, I asked which recent and/or upcoming film you'd most like to see adapted into a comic book, and while the expected three or four films rose to the top of the pile as expected, the order in which they finished was, well... unexpected. I mean, "District 9" earning twice as many votes as "New Moon"? Inconceivable! Read more...

Queen and CountryFans of writer Greg Rucka are counting down the days until the Kate Beckinsale-starring "Whiteout" hits theaters, but there's another comic book adaptation from the acclaimed wordsmith making its way to the big screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Ryan Condal will write "Queen & Country," an adaptation of the Oni Press comic series written and created by Rucka.

The film is currently set up at Fox and has already received one draft of the script from writer John Moore. Condal will take a second crack at the high-stakes adventure story. Read more...

Iron Man 2Sure, we know about the debuts of War Machine and Whiplash, but there are lots of things we don't know about "Iron Man 2" at this point, too. For example, will Whiplash get an armor upgrade courtesy of Justin Hammer? And how much of Sam Jackson's "Avengers Initiative" will be revealed this time around?

The "Iron Man 2" footage at Comic-Con seemed to pose as many questions as it answered, so here's a quick recap of everything we do know about one of the most-anticipated films for comic book movie fans:

THE HEROES: While star Robert Downey Jr. has insisted that the "Demon in a Bottle" story won't factor into the "Iron Man 2" plot, he did hint at some inner demons for Tony Stark. Back in April, he described the film as a story about "how a dysfunctional family saves life on Earth"—something that certainly doesn't bode well for the Stark Industries crew. Read more...

Twitter - AvatarAt least one famous comics artist claims James Cameron as a "major influence" and can't wait to see the director new effects-heavy film "Avatar."

Given Rob Liefeld's action scene sensibilities, that fact shouldn't surprise anyone, but he and Bryan Lee O'Malley lead the Twitter Report's feed of comics and movies-related tweets today.

"The Losers" artist Jock returned to tweeting as well, today, with some new video and pictures shown on a Spanish-language website, straight off the adaptation's set in Puerto Rico.

Each of those posts, as well as Matt Fraction on "Mad Men," and details for anyone who's ever wondered how fast Rick Remender writes, are all below in the Twiter Report for August 24, 2009. Read more...

SpawnEarlier this year, Todd McFarlane spoke with MTV News and described his ambitions to reinvent the "Spawn" franchise for the big screen. But what was once just talk and speculation has now found its way into the realm of reality.

McFarlane recently declared via Twitter that he is finally writing the "Spawn" screenplay.

"I've officially begun writing the ['Spawn' movie] screenplay," wrote the writer-artist. "The story has been in my head for [seven or eight] years." Read more...

"Surrogates" lands in theaters September 25, and while Jonathan Mostow's adaptation of Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele's graphic novel won't include the original story's villain, it will include quite a bit of Bruce Willis as the story's protagonist, Detective Harvey Greer.

We've already seen at least one image of Willis on the set of the film, and now we have another exclusive photo of the actor in action as Greer. Check it out:

Surrogates

From the amount of hair Willis is sporting in the photo (and the lack thereof in the previous image of Willis), it's pretty clear that we're looking at Greer's robotic surrogate in the above photo, and not the flesh-and-blood detective. Read more...

Stephen MoyerBill Compton, you're certainly not in Bon Temps anymore. The "True Blood" vampire is packing his coffin and hitching a ride to an all-new vampire epic—one that's not based on a romance novel, but a hard-hitting manga series instead.

Variety reports that Stephen Moyer, who plays Compton on the hit HBO series, and "90210" actress Lily Collins are joining the cast of the Scott Stewart-directed "Priest," the vampire-centric adaptation starring Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q and Karl Urban.

Even though Moyer—who is engaged to "X-Men" actress and "True Blood" co-star Anna Paquin—is best known for his blood-sucking southern gentleman persona, the actor won't be bearing his fangs for "Priest." Moyer's character is described as "the mortal brother of the protagonist," assumedly Bettany's titular warrior priest. Collins, meanwhile, has scored the plum role of the priest's niece, who is also the love interest for Gigandet's character. Read more...
