Call it the magic of Comic-Con, but things have moved fast since Matthew Vaughn debuted the first footage from "Kick-Ass," his adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s violent miniseries, during the San Diego convention.
According to Variety, Lionsgate has tagged April 16 as the official premiere date for "Kick-Ass." The studio acquired distribution rights for the project in August and shifted around the release date for its action film "The Expendables" during this release-date shuffle.
The story of a teenager who decides to don a costume and become a real-life superhero, "Kick-Ass" will debut during a crowded weekend at the box office, and just a week after another much-anticipated comic book adaptation.
Three films are currently scheduled to premiere the same weekend as "Kick-Ass," including "Piranha 3-D," Chris Rock and Tracy Morgan's "Death at a Funeral" and the latest "Saturday Night Live" sketch to go the feature route, "MacGruber."
Just a week earlier will be the premiere of Sylvain White's live-action take on "The Losers," based on the action-packed comic book series by Andy Diggle and Jock, and featuring a high-profile cast that includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan ("Watchmen"), Zoe Saldana ("Star Trek") and Chris Evans.
Last we heard from the "Kick-Ass" camp, comic book artist John Romita Jr. described the animated sequences he contributed for the film, and explained how they related to Nicolas Cage's character, Big Daddy. Along the same lines, Cage shared some details with MTV News about the design for his Batman-like costume, which fans got their first glimpse of during the Comic-Con panel for the film.
