Asked who he thought would be credited as the breakout performance in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," director Gavin Hood put his money on Ryan Reynolds.
The actor who already starred in "Van Wilder" and "Smokin' Aces" took a step to the side of Hugh Jackman's spotlight for his role as Deadpool in the movie, which hit stores on DVD and Blu-ray two weeks ago, but that part might have tipped his career favorably now that he has a Deadpool solo movie and the title role in "Green Lantern" awaiting him.
Hood points to Reynolds physical commitment to the role his success in the film.
"[Reynolds spent] the Christmas and New Year’s break with the stunt coordinators, because in that scene with the swordplay I think there’s only one shot where we used the stuntman," Hood told MTV News. "You have to do a heck of a lot of work to work on that swordplay in a very compressed period of time."
Though Reynolds' talents weren't immediately apparent, Hood watched his hard work thinks very highly of the actor.
"His early efforts were somewhat suspect, so we were quite worried, because those swords were twirling and I thought he was going to cut his arms off," the director recalled. "In a matter of weeks in was spinning those swords like a pro."
Because of that commitment to playing Deadpool, Hood cited Reynolds as one of the top actors he would like to work with again and believes he'll be well suited to carry both the Deadpool and Green Lantern movies in headlining parts.
"He’s very talented and very pleasant," Hood said, "which makes him a very appealing package."
