When Kevin Smith dropped by Splash Page HQ this week to talk about his new book, "Shootin' The Sh*t With Kevin Smith: The Best of the SModcast," it was only natural that we pick his brain about some of the comics-related projects on his plate these days—including, of course, his current DC series "Batman: The Widening Gyre."
Previously, Smith told us he'll be introducing a brand new character to the DC universe in "Gyre." While this character made a brief appearance in the series' first issue, the second issue arrives on shelves today with more info about Gotham's mysterious new vigilante. Check out the following video for Smith's thoughts about the character and the series, and consider this your SPOILER ALERT!
"Issue 2, that's where you finally meet our character, the character that me and ['Gyre' artist] Walter Flanagan came up with," Smith told MTV News. "His name is Baphomet. I don't think you learn that until issue 3, but f--- it. I spoiled it."
Along with giving us a peek inside the current issue, he also shared some thoughts about where the vigilante's relationship with Batman is headed, and what's going on in Bruce Wayne's head as the story progresses.
"Issue 2, [Baphomet] engages with Batman a bit more, and issue 3 is where I think they have their first conversation," said Smith.
"['Gyre'] is a story about Bruce Wayne hitting that age where he's like, 'Everybody I ever trained in the war on crime is doing it, if they're alive... or if they've come back from the dead. But they also have lives. They also have personal lives and sh--, and I do not have one," he explained. "Through circumstances, suddenly he's faced with the possibility that he can have the perfect life of love and happiness and still being f---ing Batman—split down the middle."
However, that doesn't mean Gotham's most eligible bachelor is hanging up the cape and cowl any time soon.
"He doesn't want to quit," said Smith. "But he's like, 'Why can't I scale back? F---ing Dick [Grayson] has a girlfriend, why can't I have a girlfriend? I f--- a lot, but why can't I be involved with somebody?"
"That's what the miniseries is about: it's about Bruce learning to compartmentalize," he explained.
"Batman: The Widening Gyre" #2 hits shelves today, September 30, featuring a story by Kevin Smith and art by Walter Flanagan.
