With so many comic books making the leap from paneled page to film reel, it was just a matter of time before somebody got the bright idea to bring Archie and his pals to the big screen.
Variety reports that Archie Comics Publications has forged a partnership with the Creative Artists Agency.
According to the report, CAA is seeking "to create branded entertainment opportunities in film and TV," meaning that Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead—plus a whole host of others—could be heading to theaters. Read more...

Despite its lackluster box-office performance, "30 Days of Night" is getting a sequel. The vampire horror franchise created by Steve Niles will live on in the form of "30 Days of Night: Dark Days," which follows the journey of Stella Oleson as she seeks vengeance upon the vampires who ravaged her hometown and killed her husband.
Niles went into detail on the project during an interview with Shock Till You Drop, revealing that the vampires in "Dark Days" will be much closer to the villains he envisioned in the comics—namely, the vampires will speak.
"I have them doing what I originally wanted which is speaking all languages," Niles told the site of the sequel's vampire menace. Read more...

Despite his potential future role as leader of Marvel's merry mutants the X-Men, young Cyclops Tim Pocock isn't calling the shots just yet. The rumors fueled by Pocock's seemingly telling post on Twitter about a 2010 "X-Men: First Class" shooting schedule last week have since been retracted by the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" star and one of the leading forces behind all things "X" now says 20th Century Fox has something entirely new in mind for the franchise.
Slashfilm caught up with Lauren Shuler Donner at a press event for the UK release of "Origins" and asked the longtime X-Men producer if there were any claws to Pocock's comment that he was, "Currently shooting Australian TV series till February 2010...then X-men first class," which she refuted. Ever since Michael Caine infamously name-checked Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman as potential cast members for the next "Batman" movie, he's been on notice. According to Caine, who's currently making the rounds promoting his upcoming film "Harry Brown," he hasn't been on the receiving end of any details regarding Christopher Nolan's next foray in the Bat-universe... but that doesn't mean he isn't interested in where the franchise goes next.
MTV Movies Editor Joshua Horowitz caught up with Caine during the Toronto International Film Festival (where the "news" first got started last year) to pick his brain about the next "Batman" movie and joke about the scoop that rocked the 'Net.
"There is nobody, there's no script, there's nothing," Caine told MTV News of the status of the next "Batman" movie. "It can't possibly be made before 2011 because 'Inception' is such a big picture." Read more...

Last week, we posted several comments from "Wanted" and "Kick-Ass" co-creator Mark Millar about the likelihood of seeing his epic, much-discussed "Superman" screenplay arrive on the big screen. Over the weekend, Millar hinted on his message boards that he believed some of the quotes were fabricated, and indicated that details surrounding the project were not presented accurately.
"I don't think I said they couldn't afford me now," wrote Millar. "If I did I was joking because writing Superman would be a massive payday so if I said that I was obviously laughing at the time. It's possible though as I like being glib."
In the interest of presenting all the facts and letting readers judge for themselves, we've posted video from the portion of the interview in question (conducted during this year's Comic-Con in San Diego). Read more...

In the wake of Warner Brothers restructuring DC's role in the company movie plans, we asked readers last week to vote on the superhero project they think the newly formed DC Entertainment should make its first priority.
While the winner of the poll should surprise no one (hint: he's faster than a speeding bullet), the runners-up might offer the most interesting take on how fans feel about DC's potential movie projects. It's also worth noting that the top vote-getter, Superman, isn't exactly at the top of DC's to-do list right now—so one of the other options might not be out of the realm of possibility.
Read on for the full breakdown of votes, as well as some opinions from readers about which characters they'd bring to the big screen first if they were calling the shots. Read more...

"Mad Men" and "30 Rock" may have won big at the Emmy Awards ceremony Sunday, but Neil Patrick Harris got Mark Waid's pick for performance of the night. Meanwhile, Jon Hamm, star of the night's Outstanding Drama Series winner, got a nod from Rob Liefeld in a tweet calling him an ideal candidate to star in "The First Avenger: Captain America."
Amid the other Emmy and NFL tweets that flew around Sunday, Jock updated on his "Judge Dredd" work and "Losers" set visit plans, adding that he's going to be drawing Jeffrey Dean Morgan for a charity event. Elsewhere, Jimmy Palmiotti called for a moratorium on vampire-genre tales, and Chris Staros lavished praise on the Windy City Comicon show in Chicago.
Check out all of those posts, as well as memorial note from Joe Quesada and which "Losers" creator had a meeting with Marvel today. It's in the Twitter Report for September 21, 2009. Read more...

Henry Rollins has already found success in music, acting and spoken-word performance, and now it looks like he's adding yet another gig to his resume: cartoon character.
According to Comics Continuum, Rollins will provide the voice of DC character Cliff Steele, better known as Robotman, in an upcoming episode of "Batman: The Brave and the Bold." While we haven't heard any details about the plot of the episode, one has to wonder whether the rest of Robotman's teammates in the Doom Patrol will also be making an appearance—and if so, could the voice casting be any more perfect than Rollins playing the team's metallic tough guy?
The episode is reportedly airing during Season Two of the series, which has yet to receive a premiere date. Read more...

When Disney announced its acquisition of Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion last month, there was talk of the studio eventually reigning in all film rights to Marvel characters, including those currently held by Fox (X-Men; Fantastic Four); Sony (Spider-Man), Universal (Hulk) and Paramount (Iron Man; The Avengers).
But now there’s a potential obstacle in the way of that plan, as the children of legendary comic artist Jack Kirby are looking to regain the copyrights on 45 of their father’s Marvel creations over the next decade.
Kirby, of course, co-created many of the most famous Marvel superheroes with Stan Lee, including pretty much all of the characters with films in the works. So, in addition to Disney and Marvel being issued notices of copyright termination, the other film studios have also been sent copies. Read more...

Director Gavin Hood got a remarkably large cast of mutants in the script for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," but when asked which missing character in the X-Men's world he would like to direct, he dropped the name of a villain who's already appeared in three films films: Magneto.
David Goyer has been the popular name mentioned to direct "X-Men Origins: Magneto," but if the "Dark Knight" writer finds himself committed when the project finally comes together, Hood says he'd be willing to step behind the camera.
"I think the character of Magneto is still a phenomenally interesting character," Hood told MTV News while discussing last week's release of "Wolverine" on DVD and Blu-Ray. Read more...
