Dire WraithsHalloween Week is drawing to a close around Splash Page HQ, but that doesn't mean we're finished with the scary stuff. All week we've brought you lists of our favorite fright-friendly characters from the world of comics, as well as the easiest Halloween costumes to create and the nigh-impossible comic book characters to dress up as this year.

However, the scariest characters in any comic book universe still wouldn't be truly frightening without a good story behind them. That's why your Splash Page team has put together this long list of some of the most terrifying tales they've ever read. Editor Rick Marshall and writers Brian Warmoth, Caleb Goellner and Josh Wigler have each assembled a list of the scariest comics that have stuck with them through the years and skulked in the dark recesses of their comic book memory.

From supernatural threats and viral terrors to alien invasions and sadistic supervillains, these books offer the perfect scary stories to celebrate Halloween. Read More...

Astonishing X-MenFans of Marvel Comics won't need to dig through the longboxes at their local comic book store to find some of their old favorites—for some of the company's best stories, all you need is an iPhone.

Marvel has released several new and classic comic book issues from its catalogue by way of Comixology, iVerse and Panelfly, three of the leading distributors of comic books for the iPhone. Among the comics released are the first 25 issues of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's classic "Amazing Spider-Man" run and the entirety of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's "Astonishing X-Men," which recently debuted as a motion comic book.

While available across Comixology, iVerse and Panelfly, the actual comic book offerings are fairly similar from provider to provider. All three are offering "Age of Apocalypse" #1-6, as well as issues of "Astonishing X-Men." Read More...

BladeHalloween season always provides reminders of the various creatures permeating popular culture, but you don't need the spook-filled holiday to raise awareness for vampires—thanks to shows like "True Blood" and the blockbuster "Twilight" franchise, everybody and their grandmother are well aware of the blood-sucking menace.

What some might not be as aware of is the multitude of both terrifying and terrific vampire characters within the comic book pantheon. There are so many compelling vampires on the paneled page, in fact, that I can only list a handful of my favorites.

Check out five of my personal favorite comic book vampires, then check back in with us in the comments for some of yours! Read More...

Judge Dredd - TwitterMuch of the comic book Twitterverse had opinions on Anthony Hopkins newly announced casting as Odin in Marvel's upcoming "Thor" movie. A few more, including Jeff Parker and Andy Diggle seemed to be partial to him over Brian Blessed, who had previously been mentioned for the role.

Elsewhere in the Twitter Report feed, I don't usually include non-comics-related talent, but director Paul McGuigan mentioned that he and Grant Morrison are working on new project together in Scotland. No word on whether this is something for comics, film or both—but the Twitter Report will be watching. Check that out after the jump, along with a great Judge Dredd mask, how one DC editor is dressing for Halloween and which zombie film Ed Brubaker has been watching.

It's all in the Twitter Report for October 30, 2009. Read More...

LoboIn the Anthrax song "King Size," which also happens to mention the Hulk, the Devil lives in California. In November's "Lobo: Highway to Hell" miniseries, however, Anthrax lead guitarist Scott Ian has written a new version of Satan just outside of the DC Universe. For his cosmic horror/action tale, Ian wanted a villain as big and evil as he could make him—and that required building Satan from scratch.

"Totally new," Ian told MTV News when asked which version of the Devil he'll put DC's moviebound bounty hunter up against when the first issue hits shelves November 4. "[The story] has nothing to do with anything really from the DC Universe."

DC's Lucifer has long been established as the ruler of Hell for the DCU, but taking the story outside of continuity allowed Ian to develop a less dainty interpretation of the Prince of Darkness. Read More...

The CrowToday we post the final installment of our five-part Halloween Week retrospective on "The Crow," celebrating the film's 15th anniversary with cast and filmmaker interviews that explore its origin and legacy. If you're just discovering this feature, be sure to look back through our "15 Years Of Devil's Night" archive.

PART FIVE: REMEMBERING BRANDON LEE AND "THE CROW"
By Ryan J. Downey

James O'Barr originally conceived The Crow to channel, process and release his anguish and heartbreak over the death of his girlfriend, who was killed by a drunk driver. Brandon Lee, whose famous father had passed away at the all too young age of 32, was cast to play the lead in the film version of the comic.

Many strange and awful circumstances surrounded what would nevertheless eventually emerge as a triumphant and transcendent film. As Time Magazine reported in 1993, sets were ravaged by a storm, a carpenter was almost electrocuted. As the cast and crew have recounted, illness, accidents and even death touched many of them in their personal lives as well. And of course, as is now widely known, Brandon Lee was killed during a tragic onset accident with just days left of filming to complete. Read More...

Brian BlessedThis morning, fans all across the world woke up to news that Sir Anthony Hopkins is in negotiations to join "Thor" as Odin, the ruler of Asgard and father to the titular God of Thunder. Given the Oscar-winning actor's high profile status, Hopkins' attachment to "Thor" is certainly a surprise, albeit a welcome one.

Still, that's not the only reason to be surprised—after all, wasn't Brian Blessed supposed to be Odin?

Blessed, a longtime collaborator of "Thor" director Kenneth Branagh, was mentioned back in June as a veritable lock for the part of Odin. With Hopkins now securing the part, it's worth wondering why Blessed's attachment was considered such a certainty in the first place. As it turns out, the rumor had a pretty solid source—none other than Blessed himself. Read More...

Men In BlackIt's been more than seven years since the last time the Men in Black donned their plastic Ray-Bans to take on extraterrestrial threats. Now, Columbia Pictures is moving forward with a sequel in the hopes that those years hasn't acted as a Neuralyzer to fans of the property, greenlighting "Men In Black III" for development just in time for nostalgia to kick in.

Variety reports that Etan Cohen, the screenwriter behind "Tropic Thunder," has been hired to handle scripting chores for the franchise's pending third installment.

So far, the studio hasn't commented on the project's pending plot, cast or general tone, but given Cohen's comedy background, the perceived "dark" trend in comic book adaptations doesn't seem to be suspect in this instance despite the source material's intensity. Read More...

Anthony HopkinsCasting rumors regarding "Thor" have included some of Hollywood's best and brightest lately, and now it looks like we could have some official word soon on one of the principal characters in the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar-winning actor Anthony Hopkins is in negotiations to play Odin, the father of Thor, who rules the Norse gods in Asgard. The casting, though not entirely official yet, debunks previous rumors that tagged Shakespearean actor Brian Blessed for the role.

Hopkins, a multiple Oscar nominee who won the award in 1992 for his role as the fiendish cannibal Hannibal Lecter, will join previously announced "Thor" cast members Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster, Thor's love interest) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki, Thor's half-brother and nemesis).
