Fans of Marvel Comics won't need to dig through the longboxes at their local comic book store to find some of their old favorites—for some of the company's best stories, all you need is an iPhone.
Marvel has released several new and classic comic book issues from its catalogue by way of Comixology, iVerse and Panelfly, three of the leading distributors of comic books for the iPhone. Among the comics released are the first 25 issues of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's classic "Amazing Spider-Man" run and the entirety of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's "Astonishing X-Men," which recently debuted as a motion comic book.
While available across Comixology, iVerse and Panelfly, the actual comic book offerings are fairly similar from provider to provider. All three are offering "Age of Apocalypse" #1-6, as well as issues of "Astonishing X-Men."
The greatest deal, however, seems to lie with Panelfly. While the other providers charge $1.99 per comic, Panelfly is asking for $0.99 per comic. Additionally, Panelfly has the most comics available with a grand total of 84 issues in its library, whereas Comixology and iVerse have 71 and 37 issues respectively.
But that's not to discount either Comixology or iVerse in this equation, as both providers feature issues of "Captain America," which Panelfly does not. Moreover, "Comixology" has the original run of "Marvel Zombies," penned by "The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman.
Marvel's latest distribution decision is sure to please the company's iPhone-using fans that can't keep up with the rising costs of printed comic books, currently averaging at $3.99 for a single issue. Whether or not Marvel continues to put future comic books on the iPhone remains to be seen, but it's surely a sign that the publisher is looking to expand its readership outside of comic shops.
