BaseballEvery year, baseball fans sweat through months of America's favorite pastime anticipating a national champion. It's not a mania exclusive to mere mortals either, as comic book characters aplenty have expressed their unique love of the game throughout the history of the medium.

This is no surprise, really, given the abundant portion of comic book creators who boogie to the baseball beat. Everyone from contemporary Marvelites Joe Quesada and writer Matt Fraction to baseball-collecting Spawn creator Todd McFarlane to classic creators like the late Gardner Fox (who named DC's premier super team the Justice League after professional baseball's organizational stylings) have demonstrated just how deep their love of the game runs.

With that in mind, it's time to take a wacky trip through the magical, slightly out-of-context baseball imagery selected from around the Internet!

"Castle" star Nathan Fillion is already a hero to many fans due to his place in Joss Whedon's over-too-soon "Firefly" universe, but could he be the "Greatest American Hero"?

When the actor dropped by Splash Page HQ, he shared some thoughts about his hopes for rebooting the classic early-'80s television series about a teacher who's given a suit that grants him superhero powers, only to lose the instruction manual. Comparing the award-winning series' demise to that of the much-loved "Firefly," Fillion explained why he's the perfect choice to star in a "Greatest American Hero" reboot.

"I think 'Greatest American Hero' is ripe for a comeback," Fillion told MTV News. "I know I'm Canadian, but I think I could put my hat in for that one." Read More...

Pinocchio: Vampire SlayerTHE STORY: "Pinocchio: Vampire Slayer" by Van Jensen (W) and Dustin Higgins (A) – SLG Publishing

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: After vampires claim the life of his father Geppetto, Pinocchio takes up arms (and wooden stakes replenished every time he tells a lie) against the undead in his kooky little corner of Tuscany and beyond.

WHY IT WORKS: Van Jensen's Pinocchio is a brooding man-child forced to confront the darkness that lurks in the corners of his fairytale-like existence. Tragedy pushes him to come to terms with the bizarre Carlo Collodian world he inhabits, meaning his former selfish mischief—and current personal quest for revenge—must take a backseat to mowing down monsters and fighting for those closest to him. TwitterCheck Jimmy Palmiotti off your list of comics creators still looking for a Halloween costume. According his tweets, he's got his Comedian outfit from "Watchmen" all taken care of—even if he's still working on growing out his mustache.

Meanwhile, Jim Lee sketched a costume last night that you won't see him draw too often, and he posted an image in his feed. There are a few other Twitter pics you should check out as well today, as the webcomics crew from Transmission X seems to have set up an exhibit in Portugal featuring some mighty fine decorations. Unfortunately, there are no pics to accompany Rob Liefeld's announcement that he'll be getting "Lakers stuff" shaved into his head to kick off the new NBA season.

Plenty more awaits you after the jump in the Twitter Report for October 28, 2009. Read More...

DaredevilFor most, the concept of a "devil" conjures images of the nether realm's most prominent demonoids—horned, hoofed and possibly tailed red dudes poised to torment with gusto. In short, devils are freakin' scary, and that's just what certain heroes count on to do their work in style.

Sure, calling yourself "devil" while doing good might seem like some kind of weird, ironic misnomer for those fighting on the side of the metaphorical angels. Whether by choice or circumstance, however, these heroes sport their archetypical underworld looks that haunt the nightmares of evildoers.

Here are five characters who fight like demons to protect the innocent, even if it means getting their horns dirty. Read More...

Batman VanishingOkay, so you've seen The Joker Blogs and "The Dark Knight Kills Christmas"—but now it's time to make room for yet another Batman parody.

The folks at College Humor have combined the sheer comedy of "The Dark Knight Kills Christmas" with the spot-on accuracy of The Joker Blogs in "Batman Vanishing," a short film that shines the Bat-Signal on one of the Caped Crusader's trickiest elements—namely, his ability to vanish from sight at a moment's notice.

"Batman Vanishing" recreates a scene from "The Dark Knight" between Batman and Commissioner Gordon as they determine whether Harvey Dent is trustworthy enough to bring into their fold—except this time, the scene takes place on the Gotham Police Department's rooftop, and Batman's "vanishing trick" doesn't go quite as planned. Steve NilesHalloween Week continues with yet another guest blog from one of the industry's most notable creators of horror comics. This time around, it's "30 Days of Night" co-creator Steve Niles, whose series "Criminal Macabre," "Freaks of the Heartland" and "Wake the Dead" (among others) are also currently in development as feature films. His sequel to "30 Days of Night," "Dark Days" is also currently in production.

I imagine for a lot of folks out there Halloween is a fun time, but not one of the bigger times of year. In my house, Halloween is right up there with all major holidays. I’d even go as far as to say I spend more in October than I do in December.

It’s the truth. I have a problem. My name is Steve Niles and I’m a horror addict. I’m also one lucky monster-kid. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Read More...

30 Days of NightReports in September that the "30 Days of Night" sequel would begin filming in October appear to have been corroborated yesterday as filming kicked off in Vancouver.

Director Ben Ketai's follow-up to the 2007 adaptation of Steve Niles' IDW comic (directed by "Twilight Saga: Eclipse" director David Slade) seems to be proceeding on schedule with actress Kiele Sanchez as Stella Oleson instead of Melissa George.

"Not something I've seen spread around anywhere else yet, but the sequel to '30 Days of Night,' 'Dark Days,' began shooting in Vancouver today," IDW publisher Chris Ryall posted on his Twitter account.

Costumes'Tis the season for costumes... and for fans to get dressed up as their favorite comic book movie characters. Sure, you can get your fill of costumes at most conventions, but Halloween is the holiday when everyone indulges their cosplay urges.

So, I've decided to steer away from the standard casting call this week and ask a different sort of question in the weekly poll. Along with the inevitable Jokers based on Heath Ledger's award-winning turn as Batman's nemesis, who else will have a big presence this Halloween?

Will Iron Man wannabes crowd the streets, or will Rorschach "hrm" his way back into the spotlight? Read More...
