Ghost in the ShellThe long-awaited adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s futuristic police thriller “Ghost in the Shell” appears to be picking up momentum this week; as DreamWorks has hired Laeta Kalogridis to write the screenplay.

According to a Variety report, Kalogridis is stepping in to replace Jamie Moss, the writer who was originally attached to the project when it was announced last year.

The producers behind the planned 3D, live-action adaptation of “Ghost in the Shell” include Steven Paul, Avi Arad—who comic fans should recall for his role in bringing Marvel out of bankruptcy—and Steven Spielberg, whose personal interest in the story reportedly helped DreamWorks land the rights. Astro BoyBy John Constantine

Given every major film studio's propensity for pumping out big-screen adaptations, whether they be of comic books, novels, musicals, or theme park rides, it's strange that we haven't seen many anime flicks.

Discounting all but forgotten direct-to-video trash like 1991's "The Guyver," there have really only been three Western-made anime adaptations. I'm reluctant to even count last year's practically budget-less "Dragonball: Evolution", so that leaves the Wachowski siblings' hallucinogenic "Speed Racer" and this week's "Astro Boy".

It's fitting that those two are the first anime properties to receive a significant marketing push and budget from their respective studios considering that their cartoon inspirations were among the very first anime to reach America way back in the 1960s. It is, however, a miracle that they were released at all. Read More...

BoneBack in 2008, it was announced that Jeff Smith had signed a deal with Warner Brothers to adapt his epic comic adventure series “Bone” into a CG-animated film. And while details have since been scarce, Smith offered some surprising information during a panel at last weekend’s Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco.

According to a report by Comic Book Resources, Smith said that he is “very happy” with the progress on the project so far and added that Warner Brothers would “probably end up making three films” in order to complete the “Bone” storyline. Read More...

Kiele Sanchez The official cast and synopsis for "30 Days of Night: Dark Days," the sequel to the 2007 adaptation of Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith's comic book, has been announced just days after an initial look at the movie's acting roster.

Most of the important casting notes—including the arrivals of Mia Kirshner ("The L Word"), Rhys Coiro ("Entourage") and Harold Perrineau ("Lost")—remain in place, though perhaps the biggest news is that Melissa George will not be reprising her role as Stella Oleson, despite Niles' own hopes.

Bloody Disgusting reports that Oleson will instead be played by Kiele Sanchez, perhaps best known as the castaway Nikki on the third season of "Lost." Read More...

Joss WhedonBy Aly Semigran

FROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: New Directions are about to join the ranks of some very famous television alumni. Joss Whedon, the man behind the fan-heavy series’ “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (which included his classic musical episode, “Once More, With Feeling”) and the legendary Neil Patrick Harris online musical sensation “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog,” will direct an upcoming episode of “Glee,” according to EW.com. Whedon will take a short break from his other Fox series “Dollhouse” to guide the kids of “Glee” into, well, a new direction.

But, that wasn’t the only joyous news from EW.com regarding “Glee.” One of the students of McKinley High School is about to have their first big reunion moment. No, it’s not time for a ten-year reunion flash-forward episode just yet, but Lea Michele (the uppity, but very talented songstress Rachel) will welcome her “Spring Awakening” costar Jonathan Groff to the show.

FROM MOVIES BLOG: Just last month, producers David Goyer and Brannon Braga were touting their latest television effort "FlashForward" here on Movies Blog. Both viewers and critics alike mostly embraced the ABC series following the premiere — but flash-forward one month later to today, and the Joseph Fiennes/John Cho-starring series seems to have hit a significant snag.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer and co-showrunner Marc Guggenheim is abandoning his "FlashForward" post, leaving David Goyer as the sole showrunner.

Bruce CampbellLongtime Sam Raimi collaborator and "Spider-Man" cameo aficionado Bruce Campbell is said to have a "meaty role" in "Spider-Man 4," but whether that means he'll play one of the film's villains or just have a larger guest stint is unclear at the moment.

Right now, Splash Page readers have the opportunity to weigh in on who Campbell should play in the fourth "Spider-Man" movie, but the brainstorming doesn't end there!

Campbell—an absolute superstar in the geek genre thanks to the "Evil Dead" franchise, "Bubba Ho-Tep" and more—would be great in a variety of comic book roles outside of "Spider-Man 4," don't you think? Read More...

Several months ago, "X-Men: The Last Stand" director Brett Ratner told MTV News that there are few characters left in comic books for him to adapt—and while that may be true for the eventual "Youngblood" filmmaker, it's certainly not true for Kevin Smith.

Smith, who recently made a colorful appeal for Jon Hamm to star as both Superman and Batman, declared that there is one comic book character that has yet to be tapped, one franchise that remains to be treated with the respect and dignity it deserves on the big screen—and one hero that wears a snug-fitting diaper.

"I think there's a brilliant, revisionist take to be done on 'Hot Stuff, the Little Devil,'" Smith told MTV News. Read More...

Astro BoyAs "Astro Boy" prepares to lift-off into theaters this weekend, the many cast and crew members of the film are making the press rounds to discuss the upcoming manga adaptation's plot and thematic elements.

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, director David Bowers described the basic set-up for the plot of "Astro Boy," which is essentially an origin story focusing on the relationship between a scientist named Dr. Tenma (Nicolas Cage) and his son Toby, who is tragically killed — paving the way for Astro Boy (Freddie Highmore) to enter the scene.

"Astro Boy is created and given Toby's memories," said Bowers of the plot. "When Astro comes back, he really is [much] the same kid, so I don't think you feel as though there's a horrible loss even though there has been." Read More...
