Hard TimeTHE STORY: "Hard Time" by Steve Gerber (W) & Brian Hurtt (A)

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: No one was supposed to get hurt when Ethan Harrow and his friend Brandon held their local high school hostage with masks on and guns at the ready—they just wanted to teach the school bullies a lesson. But Brandon's quick trigger finger prompts an otherworldly response from Ethan, killing the former and leaving the latter as the only blameworthy culprit left alive.

Ethan is subsequently tried as an adult and handed a prison sentence of 50 years to life. The outside world moves on as Ethan's mother and his lawyer continue to fight for the troubled boy's freedom, but inside the prison walls—indeed, deep within Ethan himself—lurks a super-powered creature that could give Ethan another shot at life. FROM MOVIES BLOG: A few months ago, Viggo Mortensen told MTV that he could see his "Lord of the Rings" character, Aragorn, popping up in a film meant to bridge the stories between "The Hobbit" and the "Rings" trilogy. The only problem there is that the bridge chapter is looking increasingly unlikely.

Then again, maybe not. "Hobbit" director Guillermo del Toro may have ruled out the possibility of directing the bridge movie, but that doesn't mean someone else -- even Peter Jackson himself -- can't step in to do it. That's what I find most interesting about Mortensen's words in a recent interview with ComingSoon. It sounds like he's clearer on the franchise plans since we last spoke from him, and still that talk of a bridge film persists...

Idris ElbaIt sounds like Idris Elba is already looking beyond the "The Losers" for his next potential project—but he isn't straying far from DC's Vertigo imprint.

In speaking with Slash Film, the actor—who plays betrayed black ops agent Roque in the aforementioned Vertigo adaptation—is looking to load up his schedule with "100 Bullets," based off of the recently concluded comic book series by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso.

"There's a thing that Vertigo [does] called 100 Bullets. I like that," said Elba. "I think it could be an interesting little thing. I've just started reading it and it could be quite interesting." Read More...

VEven though Veteran's Day doesn't give your kid a day off from school (Neil Gaiman checked), the Twitter Report joins all of the creators in our feed today acknowledging the risks taken and sacrifices made by service men and women alike.

Not all of the V's in today's posts belonged to Veteran's Day, though. Now in its second week, "V" watchers are starting to decide how much they like (or dislike) ABC's remake of the '80s TV series. Brian Reed and Paul Southworth were among those sticking with it.

Meanwhile, Jill Thompson was soliciting Twitter advice last night for an "X-Men" bet, Jamal Igle made his pick for best superhero movie of all time, and Todd McFarlane offered more advice to aspiring creators.

I'm @brianwarmoth and this your Twitter Report for November 11, 2009. Read More...

Dr. HorribleNow that "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" is a bona fide award-winner with a sequel on the way, everyone wants to know what's next for Dr. Horrible, Captain Hammer and the rest of the gang.

I recently spoke to "Dr. Horrible" co-writer Zack Whedon, who scripted the inline musical along with brothers Joss and Jed and Jed's wife, Maurissa Tancharoen, and along with giving Splash Page readers an exclusive preview of the "Dr. Horrible" comic he's writing for Dark Horse, he also offered up an update on the musical's much-anticipated sequel.

"We've been planning it pretty much from the minute we finished the first one," said Whedon of the sequel, which Nathan Fillion recently revealed has both a title and a few songs written already. Read More...

Will EisnerEDITOR'S NOTE: The following interview with comics legend Will Eisner originally ran on Splash Page one year ago on Veteran's Day. While we normally shy away from re-posting stories from the archives, this conversation seemed to merit an exception, and is presented here in full again on the day when we remember the nation's veterans—a group of which Eisner was a member three times over. So, if you first read this interview a year ago, please excuse its return to the front page of the site—but if you're anything like me, you won't mind giving it another read. -RM

Will Eisner is well known today for creating "The Spirit," his blue-clad superhero that received the Hollywood treatment at the hands of Frank Miller last year. But lesser known is that Eisner was a veteran of no less than three major wars: World War II (where he was an enlisted man) and Korea and Vietnam, where he was a civilian contracter eventually obtaining the rank equivalent to a brigadier general. I was fortunate enough to know Will, and four years before his death in 2005, we chatted at length about his military service, how it related to "The Spirit," and his views on the extreme stresses of war.

In honor of both Veterans Day and Will Eisner, enjoy this rare look inside the mind of the revered comics legend on this most serious of topics. Read More...

FROM MOVIES BLOG: It coulda been great! J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof — two of the key dudes behind "Lost" — were set to adapt Stephen King's sci-fi/fantasy opus, "The Dark Tower," for the big screen.

Such a seamless fit between material and filmmakers — it coulda be great, but it ain't gonna happen, as Abrams himself told MTV News' Josh Horowitz recently. "The 'Dark Tower' thing is tricky," he said. "It's such an important piece of writing. The truth is that Damon and I are not looking at that right now."

Captain Marvel - ShazamBill Birch, the co-writer of the upcoming “Shazam” feature film has revealed that Ryan Reynolds was his first choice to portray Captain Marvel on the big screen.

“I always thought Ryan Reynolds would have been interesting but now that he’s Green Lantern that’s not an option,” Birch told Cinefools. Birch also elaborated on whether he believes Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is still onboard to play Captain Marvel’s nemesis, Black Adam.

“My rule of thumb is that no actor is committed to do a movie until the first day of shooting is over with,” Birch explained. “I know that ['Shazam' Director] Pete Segal and Dwayne have a relationship that was solidified when Pete directed 'Get Smart.' As far as him being committed? I'm sure it'll all depend on the script.” Read More...
