DESCWhat has long been expected is now finally official — the pending merger between Marvel Entertainment and The Walt Disney Company is a done deal.

According to an official press release from Marvel Entertainment, a special meeting held this morning between Marvel stockholders resulted in the approval of the deal that was first announced at the end of August.

While the press release notes that the merger's completion "is subject to satisfaction of remaining conditions" of a previously filed statement by Disney, the hard part is certainly over. Barring something unforeseen and catastrophic, Marvel will be owned by Disney as soon as "today after the close of the market."

FROM MOVIES BLOG: While much of the world is busy bidding farewell to 2009, "Doctor Who" fans will be saying a different type of goodbye on January 1 when series star David Tennant concludes his celebrated run on the long-running BBC science-fiction series. One of the most popular actors to ever play the iconic role, Tennant has been the face of "Doctor Who" since 2005 and led the series to its most successful run (both in the UK and abroad) in its 47-year history.

As MTV's resident "Doctor Who" geek, I sat down with Tennant for a chat about the looming end to his run as the time- and space-traveling adventurer known as The Doctor. Along with discussing what he'll miss most about the role, he also revealed the mementoes he's taking with him from his time as The Doctor — and when he might return for a cameo appearance like so many past Doctors.

"I was presented with a sonic screwdriver in a beautiful box that the prop department made for me," said Tennant of his going-away gift. "So I got to take that home and that will sit in a very proud place in my home."

Captain AmericaIt's out with the old and in with the new as 2009 transitions into 2010 in just a few short hours. There's no question that it's been a fantastic, crazy and occasionally tumultuous year for comic book fans thanks to film releases like "Watchmen" and compelling news stories regarding "Iron Man 2," "Green Lantern" and others.

But all of that is in the past now. It's time to look forward at what we can expect in the new year. There are still many announced comic book movies and television shows that lack official casting, but with some of these projects heading into production in 2010, it's only a matter of time before the secrets are revealed.

While we all have our own favorite franchises and characters, these are the five heroes and villains I'm dying to see cast in 2010. Read More...

DreadstarTHE STORY: “Dreadstar” by Jim Starlin — Marvel Comics, First Comics and Bravura

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Vanth Dreadstar, a haunted, seemingly immortal warrior and the lone survivor of the Milky Way galaxy, loses his chance for peace when his wife is killed in a senseless attack. In response, Dreadstar assembles his crew — a cyborg sorcerer by the name of Syzygy Darklock, a catman called Oedi and Willow, a blind cybernetic telepath — to seek revenge and to find a way to end a 200 year interstellar war between two corrupt empires: the Church of The Instrumentality and the Monarchy.

The Dark Knight Is ConfusedEarlier this week it was Superman romancing Spider-Woman in Bollywood, and now it's Batman rapping about plot holes in "The Dark Knight." Give me a break, folks — it's a slow week.

However, rather than explain why "The Dark Knight Is Confused" video posted on CollegeHumor is causing me physical pain right now, here's a sample of the lyrics:

As I ride on my bike at the end of 'Dark Knight,' there's a few plot points that don't feel right.

Like why the hell did I agree to take the rap? Harvey Dent killed those people. Who gives a crap?

And the Joker pulls crimes in such an orderly manner, he must write it down in an evil day planner.

His henchman are psycho and expendable — yet somehow completely dependable

NovaMatt Fraction and Brian Michael Bendis have been spending some time together, and last night's topic of conversation was "Siege" #1. Judging from the comments, Bendis may or may not have trapped Fraction in his home, and being sealed in Bendis' house may or may not be a good thing.

Elsewhere, Ron Marz had some fighting words for illegal comics downloaders -- and particularly for those who are superhero readers. Check out his take on comics pirating after the jump along with some original Nova artwork from Philip Tan, Bryan Lee O'Malley's clarification on his "Inception" tweet yesterday and Robert Kirkman's beard.

It's all in the Twitter Report for December 30, 2009. Read More...

A new "Solomon Kane" featurette has hit the 'Net that puts the spotlight on the film's fight choreography and swordplay.

Chronicling the evil-vanquishing adventures of Robert E. Howard's pulp-era hero, Solomon Kane has a long history in comics, including a recent Dark Horse Comics series by Scott Allie and a run of comics published by Marvel in the 1970s and '80s. James Purefoy stars as the film's puritanical hero, and writer/director Michael J. Bassett discusses the new featurette and many of the other clips available on the new video widget.

Tim RothWhile 2008's "Incredible Hulk" only performed marginally better at the box office than its 2003 counterpart, many fans praised Louis Leterrier's take on Marvel's green goliath as a significant upgrade from Ang Lee's earlier film. One of the most notable improvements, according to many critics, was the addition of award-winning actor Tim Roth as the villainous soldier Emil Blonsky opposite Edward Norton's scientist-on-the-run Bruce Banner.

Even though [SPOILER ALERT] Roth's character was on the receiving end of a Hulk beatdown at the end of the film (despite becoming the mutated behemoth Abomination), the door was left wide open for a potential return. And as Hulk fans know, Blonsky is a regular presence among Hulk's rogues.

While chatting with Roth recently about "Lie to Me," the Fox television series in which he plays a human lie-detector of sorts, I managed to slip in a few questions about his experience battling one of Marvel's most iconic characters — and whether we'll see Emil Blonsky square off against Hulk again down the road. Justice League: Crisis On Two EarthsBack in September, we gave you the first look at "Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths," Warner Brothers' next animated feature, and now a new trio of images from the film have hit the 'Net.

Along with offering another look at the Justice League's evil, alternate-Earth counterpart, The Crime Syndicate, the new images also provide a peek at two other well-known characters from the DC Universe in all their alternate-Earth glory. While the alternate version of The Joker, called "The Jester," simply seems to be a more clown-ified version of the Batman villain (also: he's a good guy), Superman's pal Jimmy Olsen seems to have received a meathead makeover.

DESCWhen Joel Silver first mentioned the possibility of a 3D revival of "Swamp Thing," the reaction from fans of the DC Comics creature was an understandable mixture of excitement and skepticism. Would the 3D be too gimmicky? Would it detract from good storytelling?

Until more is known, it's impossible to answer any of those questions. What we can look towards, however, is a relatively recent "Swamp Thing" screenplay written by Len Wein, the character's co-creator.

MyPDFScripts has a copy of Wein's screenplay dated December 10, 2003. Whether this script is still being considered for Silver's planned 3D adaptation is unknown — but if this script is still in play, then "Swamp Thing" fans have very little to fear. Read More...
