Back in October, Brian Michael Bendis joked with MTV News that the sequel to his graphic novel "Fortune and Glory: A True Hollywood Comic Book Story" (chronicling the trials and tribulations of adapting his creator-owned comics in Hollywood) should be called "Not Dead Yet" due to the on-again, off-again status of the "Torso" movie over the last decade.
And while Bendis might have been joking about the title of the book, he was serious about publishing a follow-up to the critically acclaimed book.
"Yes, I've been writing the sequel over these years," Bendis told MTV News. "There's plenty of stuff going on — even, as we've talked about, with 'Torso' itself. We're almost at the point where the behind-the-scenes of 'Torso' would be a more interesting movie than the movie."
In fact, it's probably no surprise that a sequel to "Fortune and Glory" could be on the way. After all, with a "Powers" television series awaiting the green light, extensive consulting duties on the Marvel movies, and various other projects percolating on the big- and small-screens (and in the video game world), Bendis hasn't exactly been a stranger to the big-screen development machine lately.
"There's all kinds of stuff that's happened beyond just 'Torso,' with other projects I've been involved in and other meetings I've been called into," he said. "But what i'm waiting for [is] ... I want an ending that has a different quality to it than the original. If the sequel is me just going to more bad meetings, [and then] 'The End,' at one point you'll be reading it and going, 'What's wrong with you? Stay home! Why do you keep going back?'"
"But if 'Powers' goes green light and they're filming and there's a nice third act thing ... [possibly] a nice end for 'Torso' ... whatever would be a different element at the end, a different point of view, that's when ['Fortune and Glory'] the sequel will immediately go into active production, because I have tons of material," explained Bendis.
Even though a "Fortune and Glory" sequel could be a ways off, that doesn't mean fans of the series can't get their hands on some new material related to Bendis' early big-screen adventures. A new, hardcover edition of "Fortune and Glory" will hit shelves February 2010 for the project's 10th anniversary. The new edition will feature full-color art, an introduction by Paul Dini, some new text elements by Bendis and several "deleted scenes" from the original edition.
