Could the death of Brittany Murphy this weekend have big implications for "Sin City 2"? While it might seem unlikely given the brief screen time of Murphy's character, Shellie, in the 2005 Robert Rodriguez film based on Frank Miller's gritty comic book series, her presence throughout many of Miller's "Sin City" tales is certainly hard to ignore.
Like many of the characters in Miller's "Sin City" stories, Shellie not only had a significant role in the story "The Big Fat Kill," but also appeared in two other narratives used in the film: "That Yellow Bastard" and "The Hard Goodbye." However, the character also appears in "A Dame To Kill For," the story which Rodriguez and various other sources have claimed will provide one of the major arcs in "Sin City 2."
In "A Dame To Kill For," Shellie plays a crucial role in setting up a brutal team-up between the characters Dwight McCarthy (played by Clive Owen in the "Sin City" movie) and Marv (played by Mickey Rourke), who lay waste to the headquarters of a local mobster. The battle leaves Dwight horribly disfigured, resulting in the "new face" he's sporting (and which several characters comment on) in "The Big Fat Kill."
Shellie also appears in the short story "Blue Eyes," which ties directly into "A Dame To Kill For" and would likely feature into any sequel based on that story arc.
So, while comic book movies certainly don't shy away from re-casting major characters (case in point: the change from Terrence Howard to Don Cheadle in "Iron Man"), Rodriguez and the "Sin City 2" team could face some tough decisions when it comes time to cast the much-anticipated sequel.
