Now that Robert Downey Jr. is the face of two very popular, but very different big-screen heroes in "Sherlock Holmes" and "Iron Man 2," I'm probably not alone in wondering which iconic character he thinks would have the edge if the two crossed paths. After all, as audiences will discover when "Sherlock Holmes" premieres on December 25, the world's greatest deductive mind isn't a slouch when it comes to the physical side of crime-fighting.

So, when I had the chance to get a few quick questions with Downey at last night's red-carpet screening, I posed that very question to the superstar (and superhero) actor.

"Out of the suit, I think Sherlock would tear Tony up," Downey told MTV News, "but it depends — [Tony] might have a little piece of safety tech on him."

Think Downey has it right, or would Tony Stark put up more of a fight? Let us know what you think in the comment section or on Twitter!

FROM MTV.COM: It's no secret that many rappers are huge comic-book fans: For example, Ghost Rider and Iron Man are aliases of comic-book characters Johnny Blaze and Tony Stark respectively, but they're also aliases of Wu-Tang Clan's Method Man and Ghostface as well. Meth adopted Johnny Blaze out of his love for the badass with a flaming skull, mystical chain and penchant for vengeance, and Ghostface actually named his first album Ironman, and appeared in the first "Iron Man" movie.

That's why Shady Records exec Riggs Morales jumped at the idea to become an associate producer for the "Marvelous Color" exhibit in New York, which runs through February 26 of next year. The exhibit, which is curated by Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, highlights the six major black characters in the Marvel Comics Universe: Storm, Black Panther, Blade, the Falcon and War Machine. Morales said he's been looking for a way to bring the two worlds together, and felt this exhibit was perfect.

According to Variety, Summit Entertainment has tagged October 22, 2010, as the premiere date for the spy thriller based on the Wildstorm comic book series. "The Time Traveler's Wife" director Robert Schwentke will helm the film, which he described to MTV News as a "funny" take on the source material.

Marvel comicsFollowing the fantastically received "Iron Man 2" trailer, it's clear that the moviegoing public is enthused about Marvel Studios' upcoming film slate.

While the folks on the DC Comics side of the aisle have had plenty of success through "The Dark Knight" and hope to achieve similar results with "Jonah Hex" and "Green Lantern," many eyes are understandably on Marvel's ambitious plan to link "Iron Man," "Thor" and "The First Avenger: Captain America" together in 2012's "The Avengers."

Alien"Alien" screenwriter Dan O'Bannon's death was the trending topic of the Twitter Report feed this morning. The writer, who also penned "The Return of the Living Dead," made his way into memorial tweets from Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, Dave McKean and many others who took O'Bannon's contributions to sci-fi, horror and film to heart.

Elsewhere in the overlap between comics and film, Brian Michael Bendis tweeted some optimism about the film adaptation of his graphic novel "Fire," which now has a mystery actor attached. Warren Ellis accused him quickly thereafter of having had his Twitter account hacked by Mark Millar.

It's all there, along with Chris Ryall's thoughts on the IDW holiday party, Jock's gift from DC and some wisdom from Popeye the Sailor Man in the Twitter Report for December 18, 2009. Read More...

DESCDirector James Cameron's "Avatar," which makes its long-awaited theatrical debut today, might not be a comic book film, but that doesn't mean that the graphic novel is an entirely foreign prospect to this new science-fiction movie.

From the movie's cast to some members of the crew behind the scenes, there are more than a few connections between "Avatar" and comics- or superhero-based cinema. Here's a rundown of five men and women associated with "Avatar" who also have ties to comic book fare.

Back in September, it was announced that the secret comic book movie project that "Sherlock Holmes" director Guy Ritchie has been circling was not in fact, "Sgt. Rock," as many had suspected. Instead of directing a film about an American war hero, Ritchie would get behind the camera for "Lobo" — a movie based on the adventures of DC's violent, white-skinned alien bounty hunter.

However, the reports of Ritchie's attachment to the project could be a bit premature, as he told MTV News during the recent "Sherlock Holmes" junket in London.

"Is it a matter of fact that I'm doing it?" Ritchie asked when told of reports framing his participation in "Lobo" as a done deal. "I don't think it's a matter of fact. In fact, I can tell you it's not a matter of fact." Read More...

Hit-GirlThe latest "Kick-Ass" character poster has hit the 'Net, and after being treated to images of The Red Mist, Big Daddy and Kick-Ass himself, we finally get a look at the other half of the brutal, father-daughter vigilante team, Hit-Girl.

Similar to the posters before it, this one sports the tagline "I Can't See Through Walls. But I Can Kick Your Ass." It debuted on IGN, where they've made an extra-large version of it available.

Played by Chloe Moretz, Hit-Girl is the violence-prone assassin whose father (played by Nicolas Cage) has trained her to be a pint-size killing machine. Many are pointing to Moretz as being the breakout star of Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of the Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. comic book series. Read More...

War MachineLike many supporting characters who've risen to starring roles, James Rhodes has sometimes struggled to step out of the shadow of Tony Stark. Thanks to the cinematic success of the Iron Man movie franchise, however, Rhodes is on track to become one of the most talked-about heroes of 2010 as he prepares to don the War Machine armor in "Iron Man 2."

In the spirit of ensuring War Machine's longterm cinematic success, there are a few things to be learned from his comic book history. After all, a lot can happen to a guy over 30 years — not all of it awesome.

Read on for a brief rundown of a few landmines worth skipping over for the sake of story sanity, viewer accessibility and just plain Don Cheadle admiration. Read More...

First ClassFollowing the unexpected announcement earlier this week, Fox has confirmed that Bryan Singer will return to direct “X-Men: First Class.”

According to Variety, the previous draft of “X-Men: First Class” has been discarded in favor of a new treatment by Singer. Jamie Moss (“Ghost in The Shell”) has been hired to write the script and Fox is reportedly moving “aggressively” with the development.

"This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where their relationship took a wrong turn," Singer told Variety. "There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from 'X-Men' will figure into the plot, though I don't want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain."
