While Marvel’s current line of direct-to-DVD animated features kicked off with two films based on the publisher's “Ultimates” universe, a third film that would have pit the Avengers versus the X-Men was ultimately scrapped in favor of last year’s “Hulk Vs.” DVD.
“My understanding is this would have been an adaptation of the ‘Ultimate War’ series,” animation director and storyboard artist Steven E. Gordon (“X-Men: Evolution”) told Marvel Animation Age. “I never read a treatment, but since I was working very closely from the comics I assume they adhered pretty closely.”
“Ultimate War” was a four-issue miniseries by Mark Millar and Chris Bachalo first published in 2002. The story brought the X-Men into conflict with the Ultimates after Magneto was freed by the Brotherhood.
According to Gordon, the proposed “Ultimate War” animated movie would have kept the mature themes of the original Ultimate comics — in particular, the implied incestuous relationship between Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.
“I was looking forward to seeing how they handled the Pietro/Wanda relationship,” revealed Gordon. “It seems like they were going to try and actually ‘go there’ and I like the fact that it seemed like many of the characters would never even appear in a uniform.”
Gordon also related that the film would have included a second animated film focused on a popular story from Walt Simonson’s classic “Thor” run.
“The DVD was going to be done like they did the 'Hulk Vs.' DVD where half would be devoted to the ‘Ultimate War’and the other half was planned to be a ‘Thor’ story,” continued Gordon. “At one point the ‘Thor’ story they intended on adapting was Beta Ray Bill, but I believe they dropped that after some exploration. We never got too far on finding a look for the Thor adventure.”
Although Gordon indicated that the “Ultimate War/Thor” DVD appears to be in limbo, “Planet Hulk” will be released next month while “Thor: Son of Asgard” will debut next year to coincide with the release of the “Thor” live-action film.
