Early screenings of "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" have prompted nearly universally positive responses from fans, including the film's latest supporter: Kevin Smith. The "Cop Out" director is the latest to see "Scott Pilgrim" and, thankfully, he was very happy with what he saw.
"That movie is great," the filmmaker told The Film Stage. "It's spellbinding and nobody is going to understand what the f--- just hit them. I would be hard-pressed to say, 'he's bringing a comic book to life!' but he is bringing a comic book to life."
Smith went on to praise the cast of the film, including the "adorable" Ellen Wong as Knives Chau and Michael Cera as Pilgrim himself.
"Michael Cera is really great," said Smith. "He's also doing something that's different from what most people know him as in terms of the character. He's a little more self assured and Bugs Bunny-like than George Michael [from 'Arrested Development']."
As much as Smith enjoyed the performances, he was even more taken with the work of director Edgar Wright, a filmmaker he described as "the complete package."
"I love Quentin [Tarantino] and I've loved everything Quentin has done, but I think Edgar is just kind of leaps ahead of the rest of us," Smith assessed of Wright. "He's the goods and if someone said, 'you gotta pick one guy and you'd have to watch only his movies for the rest of your life,' I'd pick Edgar. He's done no wrong, as far as I'm concerned."
