Given the creative resurgence of "Smallville" during its ninth season and the series' unexpected success in a traditionally difficult time-slot on Friday nights, it should come as no surprise that the CW has renewed "Smallville" for a tenth season.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Smallville" has received an early pickup for the Fall 2010 season, joining other returning CW series — including "Supernatural" and "The Vampire Diaries." With the renewal, "Smallville" will continue its run as one of the longest comic book inspired series to air on network TV. The series will air its 200th episode early next season.
While it is reasonable to assume that Tom Welling has signed on to appear as Clark Kent in another season, it's currently unknown if Allison Mack, Erica Durance, Justin Hartley, Cassidy Freeman and Callum Blue will also return to the series.
The ninth season of "Smallville" featured appearances from The Wonder Twins, Amanda Waller, Zatanna and the Justice Society in the well-received "Absolute Justice" episode by comic scribe Geoff Johns.
Following that episode, Johns hinted on his Twitter account, that the forces of Apokolips may soon be appearing on "Smallville", which could potentially pave the way for Darkseid to appear in the tenth season.
The Martian Manhunter, Metallo, Max Lord, Martha Kent and Perry White will appear in the remaining episodes of this season.
