Two short weeks ago, an alleged list of frontrunners for the lead role in "The First Avenger: Captain America" started making the rounds that included a number of polarizing names, such as John Krasinski ("The Office") and Chace Crawford ("Gossip Girl"). The only thing that each listed actor has in common is their nationality — every one of them is a born and bred American.
No matter who lands the role of Steve Rogers, it certainly seems that Marvel Studios is looking exclusively at American actors — a fact that would put rumored candidate Sam Worthington out of the running. On the red carpet at the Academy Awards, MTV News asked Worthington if there was still a chance that he could wield the shield, but the "Avatar" star didn't sound optimistic.
"I think they're smudging me out," said Worthington. "I don't think they wanted Captain Australia, did they?"
Even though it appears that Worthington is out of contention as Cap, the actor's days wearing unique suits are far from over — in fact, he was wearing one such suit at the Oscars. The "Clash of the Titans" star showed up in a Brioni suit and Payless shoes as opposed to the comics-friendly T-shirts he's been known to wear in the past.
"Anybody in a monkey suit isn't comfortable," Worthington laughed. "You dress like you dress because you're going to get married or you're coming to an event like this. But if you can pull it off like Zac Efron over there, then it's all good."
